Regarding performance issues in the full version of UT, the UT website statest that 32 bit is probably the culprit.

I would disagree about 640x480 being recommended for modem play. I have been playing without a hitch at 1024x, with pings in the mid 200's. Running a higher resolution also limits your framerate (similar to the old Quake2 cl_maxfps) so if 30fps is good enough for you, you and your modem will both be happy. Also, iSpeed makes tweaking your MTU and other dial up setting a snap, and it's freeware.
