  • OpenGL games quitting spontaneously.

Hi, I'm having problems in all 3d FPS games with the regular GL diver, TurboGL AND WickedGL (which everyone should try if they're having problems). The problem is this: The game will suddenly quit as soon as it tries to load a 2nd BSP. For example, it will do it when I get to the second level in Halflife, or when I load the 1st level in Sin (because it plays a demo when you start it up).

The only thing I've been able to do is use the WickedGL drivers, which will let the games load somewhere around 3 levels before crapping out. Direct3D, on the other hand, works fine.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    These are my specs:

    G400 16mb AGP video card
    Asus p5a super socket7 motherboard
    K6-2 300mhz processor
    160mb of SDRAM

    AGP - 1x
    AGP apreture - 256mb
    Bus mastering - on
    EMBM - on

    Drivers - 1.41
    TurboGL drivers - 1.0002
    DirectX - 7a
    OS - Win98SE
    My hardware:

    Matrox Millenium G400 16mb
    Asus P5a-b super socket7 motherboard
    K6-2 300 processor
    128mb pc-100 SDRAM

    My software:

    Matrox bios version 1.3
    Matrox drivers 5.41
    TurboGL 1.0002
    Motherboard bios version 1009b1
    Directx version 7a
    Windows version 98SE

    More details:

    I tried AGP arpeture sizes 64, 126, 256.

I tried both the latest offical and beta motherboard BIOS.

I tried both shadow and unshadow video RAM.

I tried both AGP turbo and safe mode.

    I tried drivers 5.24, 5.30, and 5.41.

I tried all possible desktop color depths and resolutions.

I tried busmastering on and off.

The video card has its own IRQ (11) and a holder.

The IDE and AGP win9x drivers are both the latest version.

I have no other video cards.

All previous video cards are fully removed (I even nuked the proper keys in "hkey_machine/enum" a long time ago).

I do not overclock anything in my PC.

... and the problem still happens. Please help.

You have recommended that everyone try the WickedGL if having problems. Well, I'm not really having any problems now, but I'm interested in where you found the WickedGL drivers (that will run on a G400, anyway). I was under the impression that those are Voodoo 3 specific drivers.

Okay, I did a little research (in the hopes of finding a WickedGL for the G400). Unfortunately (for me) the WickedGL is a 3DFX product specific driver, intended for Voodoo2 and Voodoo3 (and possibly, Banshee) based cards.

However, in your case, since all 3 drivers do the same thing under OpenGL, I'd suspect something other than these drivers as the source of your problem. Especially since these drivers essentially use different hardware (TurboGL - G400 / WickedGL - V2), the drivers that they actually call in the background will be different.

You may need to try (gonna sound harsh, I know) removing ALL traces of video drivers, and then reinstalling them from scratch. If that doesn't work, I recommend doing a clean (format the drive) reinstall of Windows, and then trying it.

I forgot to mention that I am using a Glide wrapper called XGl200 0.04a (a glide2x.dll that translates Glide calls to OpenGL) to use the Wicked3d drivers, and it's actually very stable. I was VERY surprised at the performance and stability; not to mention the fact that they crash the game later than my real OpenGL drivers.

Your suggestion is good, and looks like a total nuke of video drivers may be in order. I will put off a full re-install of my OS, however.

Thanks for the info about the Glide emulator, and good luck with the driver nuke/reinstall.

I totally anhilated every trace of matrox drivers. I regular uninstall, deleted opengl*.*, mga*.*, g400*.*, glide2x.dll, etc. Then I re-installed.

I'm still having problems, and I can only hope that Matrox gives a helpful reply to my email.

Please tell me you didn't delete opengl32.dll in your windows/system directory, it is a windows system file that is absolutely necessary for OpenGL operation using an ICD. email me if you need it.

I kept a backup of the Opengl32.dll in my windows\system\ dir. I did figure out that it was an MS file, and not a Matrox file when I checked the version info. Thanks anyway.

I got a reply from Matrox tech support with 2 tips, but neither one worked. d0h. Also, I got a copy of System Shock 2... it tries to load the 1st level and then gives a black screen with background noise when it's done loading. When I press any key it's BANG, back to the desktop.

I can't find any solution, and neither can anybody I've talked to. It's been a very bad week.
