    Hi leporis and anyone,
    Is Win98SE really such bad?
Now we don't have Win2000, so should I say Win95/Win95OSR will be better than Win98SE for our games?
    Thanks!

nope ... W98 first edition with SP1 is reported to be more stable and faster than SE ...

W95 still has 16bit code within and hence runs slower on 32bit COU (PII+)

I had a similar problem and posted a thread ref. it to, but I seem to have fixed it and now have outstanding framerates in Q3.

My Athlon was overclocked to 800 (from 600) using a freespeed card, I am waiting for a new Arctic Circle cooler and the CPU was getting almost molten.

I have dropped the clock to 700MHZ now, and in Q3 used the following

        1024 x 768
        32bit colour
        32 bit tesxtures
texture slider 1 in from left
        sky off
        bilinear
        geometric detail medium

I am now getting 58.9FPS (previously 30ish with sky on) with my G400MAX on demo001 and 56fps (28.4 with sky on and trilinear) on demo002

I use the matrox overclock utility to go 10% up at 1024 x 768.

I benchmarked the system using norton 4 and only dropped 20ish points between 800 and 700 mhz.

Turning the sky off made a huge difference, but as for the rest of it, maybe it was a cache problem with the athlon? or something just beyond me.

It just seems that as far as 3d gaming goes the Athlon is running stuff faster at 700mhz, and the G400MAX seems to be scaling really well with it.

So now I can put the TNT2 Ultra into the spare PC and just sit back and enjoy the view on the G400.

Probably wont help anyone, but its made me happy

From what I heard, that the L2 cache of current Athlon only run at 0.4 the speed of the CPU. This has the same situation of PII and Celeron before. And probably cause the main difference in fps for Q3 as people stated in this topic.
