  • s3tc and dxtc on g400 max.....

i read in another post that the g400 supports both these texture compression techniques in software.
if so, how can we use unreal t 2nd disk and the 7 quake 3 s3tc levels?

does the g400 support either in hardware or software? is it in the drivers, or a patch?

imho, texture compression is more important than t and l, at least for another 6 months?

Matrox, do you have an answer? or anybody.

thanks for this one, this is the only must have feature that i think the g400 needs.....

    cheers!

Texture Compression is indeed a more eye candy feature than hardware t&l at the moment, I tried UT on my brother's S3 card, and the image quality jump up by 10 times and without much loss of performance. Only about 2% on the same system with my G400 vanilla. I would like to see more support on this feature in the future generation of Matrox's card.

      Hi Guys,

the S3TC levels for Q3 are already converted and can be grabbed here ... Don't forget to grab also UIArena so that these new maps will show up in your maps selection menu.

      About UT:

I didn't experience any problems since I manually copied the textures from UT's CD #2 into my gaming dir ... don't know if the G400 will simply use them without any tweaks.

I wanted to clarify something about the maps.. They can be run on non Savage chips by reducing the texture detail setting. I never intended them to be ONLY for us, which is why we added a decompression function in.(the crashes people are getting are from memory overloading after they are decompressed)

I'm very happy to see that the maps we made are good enough for someone to go through the trouble of converting them texture by texture. I believe you can play these now from our servers...(need to check myself.)

So if i install the textures of the UT second disc?
          will it use them????????
i have 256mg if it helps?
would it just decompress them and fill more texture memory?

or does the G400 just not support this?

You must be running the MeTaL API to use UT's compressed textures. Only S3 cards support this.

The GeForce 256 supports S3TC and the extra details on UT disk #2.

S3TC (or whatever they're calling it now) is a general solution. S3 might be licensing it to others, so it might not be completely free. However, they realize that it must be an open standard with others implementing it if it is going to catch on.

                So..
I copyied the texture folder from the 2nd disk over what was allready there
and it is now a lot bigger?
what happens when i play unreal?
                does it not use them
if it didnt use the textures wouldnt it just crash?

All it does is waste disk space to install the UT S3TC textures if your video card cannot support S3TC; it will still look the same as before.

Why was I able to use the special S3TC levels for Q2 ???

Because those were stored uncompressed and the enclosed OPENGL32.DLL would have enabled S3TC ... I decided to not use that DLL and eyecandy all over the place ...

just dl the q3a levels & with the texture level set to max they are bloody amazing, i think the people responsible should have a go on the rest of q3 levels.

I just read somewhere that someone said they press Print Screen in Unreal Tournament to take pictures. Don't do that. Press F9.
