Hey Bursar, what exactly is wrong with Deus-Ex in your computer?

It´s a lot slower than Quake 3 and UT an all systems, I guess... what you are facing is normal.

What are the graphic and sound settings that you use in the game?

I'll need to check all the settings at home tonight, but basically, I run the game at 1024x768x16 and have to have most of the detail options somewhere between low -> medium to make the game playable.

If I start turning up some of the settings (particularly the world texture detail), the game starts to crawl. It judders about when I try to turn around, even when I'm right next to a wall and there are very few polygons in site.

Make sure your G400 is not sharing its IRQ with nothing besides PCI steering.

        Is your Bus Mastering enabled?

Have you installed the d3ddrv.dll (patch)correctly, overwriting the previous in the DeusEX/System/ folder?

Bursar , I dont know what is wrong but on my system (witch is worse then your)is playable at 1024x768x32 + full details, but I paly it at 16bpp, because if you play at realistic level, then you need every frame.

Alec , Bursar have Win2k and there is everything at the same IRQ, because of ACPI 8-(

All my other games run fine, no problems at all.

I don't have Q3 or UT so I can't test them, but I know the Unreal engine is a bit of a monster and demands mega amounts of resources, but I thought I finally had a system capable of running an Unreal based games at decent frame rates.

I've tweaked a few bits here and there, but it hasn't made a noticable improvement.

If I run with high detail textures then the game just crawls along. Maybe I'm doing something wrong.

You right, with win2k you have a lot of stuff on the same IRQ. I find it good, because IRQ sharing under win9x was a pain in the ass. Win2k handles that a lot better.

Deus Ex is maybe a ressource hog, but damn that's the best game around !!!

Bus mastering is enabled, and as I thought, there are no changeable settings in the BIOS for AGP.

The D3D patch is installed correctly. I renamed the original file to .old and then put the new file in place.

Providing I have the details turned down the game is perfectly playable, but I just figured that I should be able to turn them up a bit without such a huge performance hit.

Still, my new GeForce2 Ultra should do the job properly when it arrives.

Turning detail textures to off gives a very good performance boost without taking out much quality in the image.

I have only one complaint about this game: the artificial intelligence could be improved a lot...

Guys just a thought, I noticed in his initial post that he has a 4.3 gig HD, that is VERY SMALL for 3d gaming purposes. Maybe thats why his performance is lackluster

Sorry, PR-man, but I believe that the size of a hard drive has nothing to do with 3D performance, provided that you have enough disk space for the swap file required by the games. I have a 256 Mb fixed Swap file size and I always mantain it defragmented.
I didn´t say that my 3D gaming was lackluster... Deus-Ex IS a lackluster game, performance-wise.

Guys I noticed that installing Cacheman and setting it to 3dgames improved the playablity of Deus Ex
