  • Will RAM help my performance?

    im thinking of getting 64megs of memory... my questions is, will it help my performance in gaming?

    the only game that really slows down enough during action to make it unplayable is Half-Life... and unfortunately its the only game i play right now... i get around 30-40 fps in 640x480 and slows down to about 5 fps during some hardcore action

    Should i get RAM.... or hold off for a while and get a new CPU?

    Ummm, how much RAM do you have now? Actually, complete system specs would be good.

        More RAM would help, but if I were you I'd think of upgrading in the near future. At the very least, buy a $128 MB stick of PC133 RAM, Crucial's will cost about US$50. Other than that:

        New MB: $130
        Duron: $80
        256MB RAM $90

        It's worth considering.

          Yes definitely think in advance and buy 133MHz sticks... you will be able to use them in your future machine unless in the future, you will choose the rambus route.
          Someday, we'll look back on this, laugh nervously and change the subject.

            hmmm... ok.... but i dont think my MoBo supports 133.. this is what it sais in manual

            "To make using bus speeds >= 95mhz possible, use only PC100-compliant DIMMs. Most systems will not even boot if non-compliant modules are used because of the strict timing issues involved with speeds >=95mhz."

            does it mean 133 wont work?

              Just because you buy PC133 Ram doesn't mean you have to run your system at 133, you can run it at lower speeds, the rating just tells you what the max recommended speed is.

                Exactly as Rags said. 133 MHz module is designed to work at up to 133MHz. No problem running it at 66MHz or 100MHz.

                  rags, but is it really worth it to get 133 if its gonna run at 100, i might as well buy 100 in that case... i can save some dough

                    The price difference between 100 and 133 sticks is pretty small. But the crucial difference is (no pun intended) is that when you upgrade your motherboard, which ought really to be your next step seeing as you have a K6, you wont be held back by 100mhz memory and looking to upgrade to 133.

                      You will save less than ten bucks. You can use your PC133 in future systems should you decide to get an up to date system from AMD.

                        The price difference is actually $0 around our parts Nehalmistry. Some places out my way actually charge more for PC100 as it is out of fasion and they need to order it in. By all means grab 128 megs of the good stuff. It'l do wonders.

                            Crucial 64MB CT8M64S4D7E is $35.99.
                            Crucial 128MB CT16M64S4D7E is $63.99.

                            RAM is so cheap these days. I paid $125 for 128MB less than a year ago

                              BUY RAM NOW!! Manufacturers appear to be selling it at a loss to get rid of built-up stock. Go grab half a gig. I did.
