I'm playing CMR2 with a Microsoft Sidewinder gamepad (the old ones they don't sell any more). Those are great for rapid response on brakes / acceleration. While the steering is digital, and not really realistic compared to analogue steering (can I say force feedback wheel? ), I do think that it's easier to use in driving games, as it doesn't take much time to make a turn, as with a wheel you need to turn it around completely.

While we are on the subject of driving games, I must give a mention to codemasters Toca2. Seriously good touring car racing, its always rated very highly in the UK gaming charts.
I use a MS Sidewinder force feedback wheel and with all the various settings you can employ, it is quite realistic.
Seem to remember reading somewhere that one or two folks had trouble getting the MS Sidewinder wheel to work on Colin McRae 2.
Might be worth looking into Ant. (I said I was buying it for the kids....honest!!)

          Hey Ant,

I use the FF Joystick from Guillemot and I'm very satisfied ...

Have a look at their Racing Wheel.

          Cheers,

I have found CM2 runs very choppy on my AMD K6II 400 system with my 32mb G400. A much better rally game is Rally Masters. It runs real sweet and is big on eye candy with it's EMBM support. I also enjoy the gameplay a lot more and use a Logitech "yellow" wheel.

I was all hot to get a wheel when I bough my current system in Spring '99. I was looking for something that would give me real life feedback so I could get my thrills in virtual reality instead of racking up the tickets in my M3. I test drove the MSFT, and Logitech wheels under the Star Wars racer and was quite underwhelmed. The ACT Labs wheel looked the most promising but I lost my enthusiasm after that experience. Have wheels improved since then and is there anything that can come close to the real thing?

Hey, Syncorswim, try to reduce some game detail... I play CMR2 with my Celly at 466Mhz and my G400 16Mb at 1024x768 silky smooth.
And yes, MK, I agree that the keyboard is damn enough to set record times! My friends with all those fancy steering wheels are already used to smell my burning rubber...

Heh, once you try the wheel, you will not be coming back. It's like the difference between a 14" old monitor and a 17" flatpanel.
Someday, we'll look back on this, laugh nervously and change the subject.

After having numerous problems with W2K I switched to Win98SE to run Colin McRae2. It is very enjoyable with MS FF Wheel but the real competence is in the heart and I still fail to make it to the expert mode.

I am assembling a new system for a friend and I chose a GEF Mx Video Card, I am happy to see that CMR 2 looks better on the Matrox, compared to the GeF

Just to jump back on topic ;-)

                          Cool Games:

                          Q3F for Q3A (The only reason I bought Q3A)
                          System Shock 2
                          Shogun Total War

Also I have just played a demo of ONI. It rocked!

Still, first place goes to Q3F. It takes a long time to learn and even longer to master and even then, you won't get bored with it
