quote: "but now I see you're talking about the retail version, right?"

Yes, I haven't downloaded the public tests.

quote: "As I said, maybe an IRQ list would help. What's your AGP aperture?"

I don't know how to generate an IRQ list other than manually. But, all of my devices have their own IRQ, no sharing. I've changed the aperture anywhere from 64 up to 256 with no difference.

Different video drivers produce different results, but none that I've tried so far keep the game from crashing or locking up the system at various points. Obviously, the game has some problems that are exacerbated by various external influences within a given system.

Here, in the Matrox support forums, and in usenet alt.comp.periphs.videocards.matrox, I asked if anyone running win98 and a g4xx
card could successfully run the game. Not a single person has responded in the affirmative.

Perhaps the only fix will be from Matrox or Croteam, or both...

Plays fine here with the 6.51 drivers in 800x600 32bpp, few graphical glitches but no crashes at all

quote:"Are there any patches for the CD version of the game (1.00)?"

None are available that I know of.

quote:"Is my driver setup -- which works fine for the rest of my games -- inappropriate for Serious Sam (PD v5.52 + v6.10 ICD)?"

Sorry, I can't speak to mix'n'match video drivers working. IIRC, version 6.23 drivers worked the best on my system. "Best" means that I could play the game all the way to level 14, but had numerous severe crashes along the way. As near as I can determine, levels 3, 4, 12 and another that I can't recall are usually the problem areas that I experienced and that others reported.

              quote:"execute default quality!"

In reference to the game addons. Tried this with no success. It did change one thing. Instead of crashing in engine.dll, it now reported kernel32.dll as the culprit.

Cool! How many levels have you completed? Can you describe what game settings and video tweaks you have?

                thanks!

Sam? Have seen it, was there, killed it, bought the T-Shirt. Well, what i want to say is, that Serious Sam runs flawlessly at 800x600x16, 6.50 driver, 98SE, Athlon600 right out of the box, which means i didn't change any settings.

                  Regards

                    Sorry to hear that, Pinspinner.

It remedied the lock ups that I had after messing with the setup of SS ...

what do you have "wait for vertical retrace" set to ?

IIRC, it is set to yes. Have tried it both ways, with negative results.

                      thanks!

Croteam just released a patch, US only, which updates SS to version c.

I applied it, but it still crashes at the same spot.

on a flatmate's GeForce2 GTS, the game will crash in random spots as long as he's got multi-texturing enabled. As soon as he disables it, the crashing stops
