Well, here's the latest. It seems that I finally got the game running right.

I got a new CD, wiped out all traces of the previous install that I could find. Again, the game ran fine up until level 4, where I started having freezes.

Then, per previous tips from various sources, I set Video Options/wait vertical retrace= yes and Advanced/advanced rendering = disabled.

Those settings have stabilized the game so far. I'm now through level 4 and halfway through the Moon Mountain secret level without any more problems. I am using the Normal difficulty level, which takes a while to figure out each level...

I am using matrox drivers 6.50. Drivers 6.51 seemed to give me a few problems with Quake 3. All this after updating all hardware/software drivers and both motherboard and G400 bios to the latest available. All bios settings are default.

Thanks to all who tried to help. It seems that there are a number of Serious Sam CDs that have corrupt portions. I'd suggest getting another CD when all else fails. Hope this helps someone.

I tried using the accuracy setting instead of speed. It didn't correct my problem with SS and I didn't like the way the game played with that setting.

The settings I gave are working fine now, I'm past the secret level, halfway through level 5, still running fine.

Obviously, there are some issues with the game, because it seems that these settings are used universally by quite a few users with different video cards. That indicates to me, something other than hardware problems.
