  • HL, lockups and OpenGL

I know this is a really old issue but i've been to a LAN session lately where we played some HL mods too. BTW, check out Global Warfare. Anyway, when i ran under OpenGL HL crashed after a few minutes with a soundloop. When i used Dirext X nothing like that happened. This is pretty confusing, since HL is an OpenGL game with a wrapper, isn't it? Therefore i asume that the G400 is to blame.

On a sidenote, it is a fresh Win install (now 4 days old) and other 3D games like Serious Sam are running fine in OpenGL.

OK, enough talk, here's my system info:

I have a similar problem thats driving me up the smegging wall.
I've got a fresh install of Win98SE, fresh install of Half-Life, latest Matrox, Via and SBLive drivers, and it crashes either with soundloop or more often "HW.DLL has cacked its pants."
I've reinstalled completely and even copied in a fresh HW.DLL from another partition (My Win2k one, which just crashes with no error messages).

Before I upgraded my Mobo/Cpu, I ran 1.1.0.6 reliably. Since the upgrade and running 1.1.0.7, it falls over like Emile Hesky in the 6-yard box.

Maybe its the 1.1.0.7 upgrade thats cack? Valve seem to screw something up in every update. I knew this one was too good to be true.

      Did you try Direct X?

That's an idea, but OTOH i recall having these crashes before the 1.1.0.7 patch too. It wasn't of any importance since i don't play HL too often but on the LAN session it was anoying.

Try to set the game to Direct X and check if it's running, then we may consider this the same problem. Else i am not sure, because i don't get any error messages, it simply freezes and i have to cold reset the PC.

Well, let's see if someone has an idea to solve this issue.

Theres a post or two on the Matrox Tech Support forums that suggest disabling sound if you have lockups in HL. This got me thinking as since upgrading the CPU I've reenabled EAX and 3D sound.
Disabling this made did indeed mean I no longer get HW.DLL errors - it just crashes and dies totally.

Switched to DirectX mode and its run perfectly so far, although it seems laggier - bloody annoying when you snipe an HWGs head 3 times inna row and he just keeps on moving and firing.

This leaves the culprit looking pretty much like the new 1.1.0.7 patch from Valve.

I'm not arguing with any other suggestions here, since I'm an Aureal kinda gal....

but I do notice that you have DMA's for your SB legacy device, but it's not listed in your IRQ list, and it certainly is not on the traditional IRQ 5.

Is it possible, Rich, that your SB drivers are not fully installed? I know that I have to load the legacy drivers for my card in Autoexec.bat ... perhaps your fresh install of Windows deleted any such entries and your card is a little confused by this.

          Just an idea.

Thanks for your answer and pointing out the Matrox Support thread, Motub.

I never noticed that the legacy device isn't shown in the IRQ tab. But then i always thought the legacy part is for backwards compatibilty... anyhow, System Properties shows the legacy device on IRQ 7.... go figure why the info tool doesn't say so.

But, incidently this is of no concern, because i ripped the whole box apart (means, i removed the SB and the NIC) and tried again for no result. Still crashes in HL/OpenGL, only the soundloop is missing DirextX is fine, though. Therefore i tend to follow RichL, either the new HL patch is flawed or the Matrox drivers are. BTW, i noticed that Starcraft now displays [EDIT] horizontal [/EDIT] stripes during play again. That's something i encountered last around the 6.0 versions of Matrox drivers. Coincidence?

Ah, i don't really care anymore. All games are running, not the way they are supposed to, but then, did you really expected that? Go check the Matrox thread now...
