  • Doom 3 video shown at E3 was in medium quality

According to the nice people at DoomCenter the presentation of Doom 3 at E3 was infact running at medium quality graphics, here's a snippet:

Update: Apparently, Carmack was comparing ATI's next-gen card to NVIDIA's GeForce 4 - not the new technology that should be out in August. Also, Carmack has posted notice that the Doom 3 video at E3 was actually run at medium quality - not max. Jeez.

"We actually screwed up at E3 -- we should have been running it at high quality settings (uncompressed textures, anisotropic filtering), but we were chasing some problems the first day, and it got set back to medium quality. The problems had gone away, so we left it that way, rather than risk changing it back."
OMG, wonder how it looks in high quality then!

Btw: I've found a new working link to the leaked Doom 3 gameplay video.
    I'll buy a new card Soon™, very Soon™!

Taking the quality of the video into consideration I don't think you would see a difference between high or medium quality.

Either way, the video was damn impressive!

From the pics and videos I have seen Doom3 will look much more impressive than Unreal2. But who knows what will happen until then, I guess the one who lives will see.

Yeah, the blurry-cam video isn't going to convey any of the quality. It does give a reasonable idea of how dark, gritty and down right scary it will be tho!

Looking damn fine all the same!
      Cheers, Reckless

I'm thinking about what the people who went and actually saw the video live at E3 said afterwards, that it felt like it was pre-rendered. And they didn't even know it was only at medium quality.

Wonder if medium quality = pre-rendered feeling means that high quality = lifelike feeling!

Btw: listen to this, it's JC and trent in an 20-min interview from E3.

nice interview znucke! i especially like the passage where carmack says that D3 will concentrate on quality over speed. i could say more, but why dont everyone listen for theirself

I mostly like immersive games (e.g. Myst series) but occasionally like a fragfest (e.g. Doom/Quake series). Doom III might fit the bill quite nicely: Its hard to tell from the E3 cam video but the snapshots got me really interested. I would really like to see more games come out with intriguing puzzles that push the audio effects, IQ, and pizzazz element by exploiting the latest HW features.

                JC comments statment!

The nVidiots over @ nV News mailed JC about his statment concerning the next-gen card from ATi, here's what he answered:

It [The ATI card used] was compared against a very high speed GF4. It shouldn't be surprising that a next-generation card is faster than a current generation card. What will be very interesting is comparing the next gen cards (and the supporting drivers) from both vendors head to head when they are both in production.

Everyone working on DOOM still uses GF4-Ti cards at the moment, and if someone needs to buy a new video card today, that is what I tell them to get.

                John Carmack
Btw: EB has put up a form for pre-ordering Doom 3, says that the game ships on 3/31/2003.

                    JC on P!

Once again DoomCenter has something intresting, here's a snippet:

I sent an email to John Carmack asking about Doom 3 and the upcoming Matrox Parhelia-512 card, which looks quite promising. Currently John does have Doom 3 running on the Parhelia, but he can't comment beyond that, so we'll just have to wait to see Matrox' new card will perform. If you'd like more information on the Parhelia-512, AnandTech has a nice article about it. Here's the quick Q&A:

You've made lots of comments recently about the performance of Doom III on current (as well as next-gen) ATI and NVIDIA cards; however, the upcoming Matrox Parhelia-512 looks promising as well. Have you been working with the Parhelia technology at all? Do you have any comments about its performance for Doom III?

"I have Doom running on the Parhelia, but Matrox has requested that I not comment on it until they are ready."
Hopefully we'll get to know how well P. preforms under D3 sometime Soon™!

If carmack only has an alpha board(and he probably has, a guy like carmack is most likely one of the developers that doesn´t have to wait for a retail board), then i think it is a good idea not to speak about performance.
This sig is a shameless atempt to make my post look bigger.

                          Q:A by JC on D3

Reverend at B3D has gotten some answers from JC concerning some questions regarding D3, which is posted at their forums. Here's a snippet:

Regarding the seemingly low-poly models (from the screenshots), shadow volume lighting and how they relate to his engine. I said that his engine may slow down if higher polies are used and if ATI's TruForm may help out :

"The game characters are between 2000 and 6000 polygons. Some of the heads do look a little angular in tight zooms, so we may use some custom models for cinematic scenes.

Curving up the models with more polygons has a basically linear effect on performance, but making very jagged models with lots of little polygonal points would create far more silhouette edges, which could cause a disproportionate slowdown during rendering when they get close.

TruForm is not an option, because the calculated shadow silhouettes would no longer be correct."
Only three Q:A but could still be worth checking out.
