I used to have that too, but I'm not sure how I fixed it back then. Make sure you have the latest UT patch, the latest vid card drivers, and Direct3D/OpenGL versions.
If none of that works, try running the game using different modes (Direct3D, OpenGL, software, etc)
ups, sorry it was too late last night, i forgot to tell:
System : Tyan TigerMP - MP1600+
Parhelia 128 drivers 228
Win2000 SP2+SP2SRP1
UT Patch 436
i tried both D3D and OpenGL
UT is kinda driving me nuts. I can't seem to get rid of these framerate dips down to 15-20 fps depending on resolution. Usually it's averaging around 50-60, again depending on resolution.
At any rate, it chops a bit at 1920x480 (triplehead) and starts getting annoying at 2400x600.
Funny thing is the Wolfenstein demo runs silky smooth at 3456x864 on my dual P3-1.0.
I guess I'll have to reinstall it & hope that helps. I'm gonna miss my custom bots though. I gave all of them food or beverage names... Whopper (Cyborg), Pizza (War Cow), Beer (Skarj), Pepsi (Nali), etc.

Still no dice on the OpenGL annoyances. I've tried the updated renderer. It's a little better but some spots are still choppy.
The funny thing is I can't seem to find any settings that make an appreciable difference in framerate. It seems like no matter what I do I still get these dips down to 15-20, even in 640x480.
Another weird thing that's going on is it feels like I'm playing in slow motion using OpenGL, even in areas where my fps is up to 60+. Oddly enough, 4x FSAA plays just as well as no AA. My average FPS is lower, but it doesn't seem to make the dips any worse.
I did manage to figure out my screen corruption problem in D3D though. The D3D renderer doesn't play nice with Ansio forced on. It corrupts my HUD, weapon selection, etc. 16x FAA & everyting on in the game is fine though. The game looks pretty decent in 1920x480 w/ AA on, so I think I'll just use that and hope for some driver improvements.
Ok, I just reinstalled win2k & UT. Still no change. (System needed cleaning anyway...)
I've played around a bit more, and it's still dropping down to 15fps in a lot of spots in the Game of the Year expansion levels even in 640x480x(16 or 32) with everything I could find turned off.
This thing is slower than my G400 in UT using OpenGL.
RtCW works great though... 3456x864 w/ everything on & 4x FSAA (ran into some fog problems...) It seems smooth, though I have no idea on framerates. RtCW isn't really fast paced like UT though (at least not yet), so perhaps I'm getting 25fps & just not really noticing it.
Still no dice. I average around 50 in surround on that level, but I still take these hits down to 20 or so even in 640x480. Turning off volumetric lighting helps, but it still isn't smooth.
The problem seems to be related to lava, and perhaps other things (definately most noticeable around lava), so at least some maps are playable.
