  • Looks like I'm the only kid on the block with this problem

    Hi all P-owners

I've got my dirty hands on a Parhelia last Thursday and I'm sorry to say I haven't had so much fun with it as the rest of you guys.

The problem is that everytime I run a 3D game my monitor goes on standby. Same behaviour as when powering off the PC and leaving on power to the monitor. And no, it's not couz it's out of range, the monitor simply doesn't detect any signal. A friend joked about it and said it properbly just switched to the other monitor output and all I had to do was moving my cable to the other port. I didn't think it was funny

The really strange part is when running 3Dmark2001 or 3Dmark2000 everything checks out okay. nvChess is also okay. All the visual showoffs on the Matrox driver CD checks out okay too.

The games I've tried so far is ReVolt, UT (v4.00), Colin McRae RC and a few other from that era (I've been out of the gaming loop for well over two years, as the titles listed might suggest).

Can anyone comment on how why and if the signal to the monitor dissapers when starting some D3D applications?

I've tried the 223, 225 and 230 driver without any luck. Also, all other drivers in my system are the most recent or as close I can get them when not having I-net access @ home
This really puzzles me. And it buggers me too.

    Check your DirectX...

Try unistalling and re-installing DirectX and the Parhelia Driver.

Also I believe there's a MUCH newer patch for Unreal Tournament (sorry, I have to spell it out, since I live in Utah, I keep thinking people are going around blasting Mormons, which would be kind of fun. Anyone made a mod for this? )

DirectX is v8.1 and tjecks out fine.

Haven't tried removing the P-drivers and throwing them in again. I'll try it when getting home. Not sure what to expect there should come of it.

Tried a friends Max Payne yesterday. Ran smooth exept when using triple buffering in which case the darn thing just shovels me right back out on the desktop, same happened when trying to use 16xFAA.
Also, one time, at band camp... ehhh sorry about that. Well the game unexpectly exited with no error messege, but it only did it once.

UT v4.00 works with an TNT2U in the same machine running the same windows. It also runs fine when using SW-rendering with the Parhelia (SW-ren. looks really crap by the way) however still D3D acc. causes a no-signal situation. And since other gamez also provokes this behaviour I don't think getting the latest version of UT fixes the problem.

Does anyboby have a respons to this?

Sure - they made many improvements to the Direct3D renderer through the patches.

You can read all about it at http://unreal.epicgames.com

I'd say that downloading the 4.36 point release is a very good idea as it solves many many many bugs with single and multiplayer modes.

I hadn't played Unreal Tournament for a long time, so after hearing some of the problems with it I decided to install it. I installed it freshly (in fact hadn't had it on my harddrive since before I had windows XP on it) and then instantly installed the patch. Then I installed the High Compressed textures off of the second CD and HOLY HELL! Not only did it run silky smooth at 1024x768@32 but it looked SWEET. According to the FPS counter within the game it was running an average of 40fps, This was with FAAx16 on. I have 384mb of RAM and a P3-850mhz. It ran so smooth and fast that I got my ass handed to me by BOTS. Now admittedly I hadn't played for a VERY long time, but I used to be able to beat 5 bots on the hardest level and these were just average.

I hope you changed to OpenGL as the textures off the 2nd CD don't work with Direct 3D

But glad ur enjoying the game again
I'm still playing it after 3 years and my clan (4FS - For F*ck Sake) won a new league a few days back w00t!!!!

Nope, was playing it in Direct3d. Guess I should have tried that. Oh well, it looked great anyhow :-) I'll have to check it out in OpenGL to see how it looks.

Looks great but way too slow. Direct3D is way faster

Infact, UT is the only game that I turn off 16x FAA just so I can keep the fps above 60 all the time. It's the only game I play where the fps is more important than anything else

                      How old is your monitor?

This happens to me when my desktop is changing resolutions because I have a 10 year old NEC monitor, all I have to do is turn it off then on again and all is fine.

This doesn't happen often, only when playing games and the refresh rate/resolution changes dramatically.

You may be having the same problem.

                      Let me know.

                      Regards,
                      Elie

Maybe it tries to play at a res / refresh that is out of range?, so it turns off.

                          Hi Elie

In fact I havn't tried that. The monitor is fairly old and a really crappy one too. Gonna give it a shot when I come home today. Anyhow, I find more and more program causing this "syndrome" to appear. The latest is a visual plugin to Winamp.

To Marshmallowman, no I don't think it is out of range, cauz the monitor displays a message when this occurs, it also displays a message when the signal cable is disconnected. It only does the power-off thing when the PC powers down or the above situation occurs.

Anyway, I have ordered a new monitor and should the problem actually be that my current monitor can't handle task the problem should simply go away by itself. Thou I can't imagine it would, b'cauz the fault wasn't there with my TNT2 card.

I'll report my findings, but until then have fun and don't get too wrapped up in the game called real life.

                          Cheers

                            I stand corrected!

Got my new monitor yesterday. So far no applications has been able to pull the no-signal trick on me.

I guess the old monitor simply doesn't show all instaces of out-of-range with an out of range message.

I still can't figure out why this didn't happend with my old graphics card thou.
But never the less, I'm glad the problem has gone away.

Thanks your all for pitching in.
