Oh and once the game has started, the site here:

is very very useful Add "?planetname" to the end to highlight our own planet. It was built by Prince Volvo (aka rbrodka at the silentpcreview forums) so no one's allowed to attack him (I've been allied with him quite closely the last couple of rounds, as have most people I think - he plays a passive game.

Well, the round's going to start imminently... so if anyone else wants to join in now would be the perfect time!

Lesson 1 learned today, "Don't perform missions". I pressed the perfrom mission button to see what it does and I lost a lot of prestige (It didn't asked if I wanted to perform a mission and it isn't mentioned in the help section):

While traversing the merchant lanes, one of your ships is rammed by an errant scrap barge.

Both ships are completely destroyed, cluttering the lane with debris for months. Furthermore, a large piece prominently displaying your planet's identity is recovered and you are blamed for the delays suffered by all ships inconvenienced and your customs office is inundated with requests for restitution.

        You lose 472 prestige.
        You lose 674 credits.
        You lose 12 food.
        You lose 12 fuel.
        You lose 12 metals.
        You lose 12 radioactives.
Your population shrinks by 20 people.
        This mission takes 2 months.
I'm now at the bottom of the list .

That's bad luck. On average the results are positive, more so if you increase your Science, Diplomacy and Offence (iirc) ratings. And you can actually perform one every month if you happen to be in front of a computer - a little "glitch" that rewards people with nothing better to do

I think I bumped into a bug, the Planet Overview page isn't working anymore after I changed my tax rate, I already posted a message at their technical support forum .

Luckily the problem has solved itself , I'm currently number 1 in prestige let the fall to the bottom begin .
Seriously though that bug cost me a lot of population the tax rate was set on 5% due to that bug. And I also learned not to cancel structures that are being build, you don't get the resources back.

Some questions: is it worth to build Orbital Defense and Surface Defense Batteries, and is a Starbase worth the money, I want to focus more on Planet defenses then on my fleet (less maintenance more profit (latinum )). So I can focus more on the commercial aspect of the game selling stock and ships.

P.S. if you need ships or resources contact me I'll make you a very good price for them.

Starbases are hard as feck, and worth it I think - as long as you've got plenty of ships as extra guns to take down any attackers in the first wave. Also give you extra habs and more importantly a ton of building yards. You'll need to do a fair bit of research first though.

Generally I use ships rather than batteries as my guns (you'll see later that orbital and planet space is quite limited), then top up with orbital/planetary shields for everybody to hide behind whilst the ships blow up the attackers.

Re. resources/ships - I'm doing fine at the moment, but when things start hotting up we will need to share things about a bit As I've played a bit before, I'm happy to play a support role for the other murcers - at the moment I'm trying to max population to give me a strong base for later on...

I have to much resources already built 9 warehouses. I'm also focussing on population and research atm, I was first in the population chart at the beginning of the round but that bug set me back (I was losing population then).

I already build a lot of Orbital Defense Platforms and mine fields, I hope they can cover for the first attack together with my fleet. But I'll try to build some more, I'm now in the fase of switching some stuff to the improved buidlings which will take some time.

Demolish some of your refining/mining facilities then Save the maintenance costs. Metals are the most valuable though so it might be worth keeping the metal mines...

Don't go too overboard on building stuff just yet - it costs a lot in maintenance and may well not be needed. Unless you provoke someone...

I'll keep the metals for the starbase , but maintenance isn't a problem yet, I'm still making a fair amount of money. And I already earned a lot through commerce.
