  • A few thoughts on Oblivion...

Picked up my copy of ES4: Oblivion yesterday evening. tried it out for a few hours and was simply blown away.

infact i had to take a break from the game to sit back and digest it all. w00t! i've played every single Elder Scroll game, some of them i've finished multiple times (yes that means i've spent a good portion of my waking life playing these games). This one takes the cake... infact; compaired to almost all the RPGs i've played, this one is THE ONE!

    a few points:
gfx are incredible. looking at the box; minimum and recommended sys requirements are intimidating. having said that; i think i must have wasted atleast an hour or two yesterday just staring at shit.

Horses!!! it looks like bethesda brought back a lot of stuff that was were in Arena and Daggerfall (ES1 & ES2) that they took out of Morrowind. You can ride a Horse just like in Daggerfall. i also got the horse just a couple hours into the first quest chain.

another thing they've brought back is INSTANT TRAVEL. open the map, click on a location and click OK. w00sh load screen and you're there. this is HUGE. If you play a lot of RPGs then you know how much time you've spent just running around trying to get to a location. It's true that getting there is part of the fun but it does get old very fast (take WoW for example) especially with quests that send you back and forth a lot.

side note: if you are on your horse and decide to instant travel to a city district on the other end of the continent. Poof you are there and your horse is automaticly stabled at the city entrance.

looks like you can buy property again in this game (morrowind you eventually got a house near the end of main story arc, not quite the same), in daggerfall you could also buy ships... makes me really curious as to what else is back.

there is a lot more for me to blurb about but i'll save that for later, after i've digested a little bit more of the game.

If you like RPGs then you difinitly want to check out this game.

If you've played morrowind before and didn't like it... you should still check out this game

myself, i think i'm gonna be stuck with this game for the next couple of years!!!

PS: Mehen > my boss won't let me borrow the 30" to 'try it' at home

dbdg> can't do that :P :P :P [insert tease] by the way i joined the mages guild (took me all afternoon can you believe it)

gnep> if you have a GF dump her, if you have a wife ask for a separation now. a month you say? this game is a lot more like ES2: Daggerfall(-all the bugs and 2d sprites) than morrowind. point is despite all the delicous eye candy there is definitly a retro feel to the game.

          A recommendation for this game comes with some warnings;
double check system requirements. your HW might not be supported.
hazardous to long term social life (ie: more than a month )

I'm installing the game as I speak. I have read that it is incredible. Hope it lives up to its expectations. I'll report back later.

BTW, running it on an AMD 3500+ 1GB PC3200, X800 XTPE.

I've been playing this game pretty much nonstop since i got it thursday afternoon (except for when at work) and all i can say is, quoting winamp..."It really whips the llama's ass"...

I'm running it on a PC with the same specs as Helevitia and it's running damn sweet. I don't have everything turned up to the absolute max but it certainly looks good enough for me.

Playing the game as a 'Pure war wizard'.
I normally mess things up by not selecting a good combination of race and class so I went for a 'model character' from the Prima stratagy guide.

                      Male High Elf
                      Custom Class: Blade Mage
                      Specialisation: Mage
                      Class attributes: Intelligence, willpower
Race bonuses: fortified maxium magicka, weakness to fire, frost and shock. Resist disease
                      Birth sign: Lady
Skills: Alchemy, Alteration, Conjuration, Destruction, Illusion, Mysticism, Blade

Going well so far, but my AIW 9700pro is really not up to the task. I am considering buying an xbox 360 rather than upgrade the PC....

Crapsticks! I've been using my magic that I am journeyman level in all areas making my character level 11. The problem is that I seem to have gone from level 6 to 11 very quickly and now my main guy is too weak as I can get killed by random wolf encounters

I've been using my attribute points on strength intelligence and wisdom.
I think I need to get some stronger magic as my most powerfull spell is the 'destruction' touch frost, which does 15points of damage. I've also bought summon greaves, which is cool - but I can't wait to combine it and the arcane uni so that I can have 'summon armour and a weapon'.

                          Any tips?

Not sure if you have read about it but the vast majority of enemies scale with the player, including their loot and armour (very strange system and wrong in an rpg). Wait until you come across bandits wearing 30000 worth of armour.

Therefore, if any of your skills are lagging behind you are just going to find the game more and more difficult as you level up.

I read that only the top enemies of their tree level with you. the rest stay the same. Although that is not my experience. How much armour/damage did you have at level 11?

I've not been following the main quest, but have set off to complete the Mage quests. I have just joined the arcaine university
