  • G400/Freespace 2 comments (mini review?)

I finally got the dang demo downloaded. Living in the boonies with 56k dialup isn't all it's cracked up to be.
The graphics options let me select the usual Primary display/3dfx Glide, but also gave me the option of running the Primary display at 1024x and 32bit color options on both 1024 and 800x.
The user interface was polished up a bit, but everything should look familiar to anyone that played FS.
I fired it up at 1024x in 32 bit. Wow. Absolutely stunning. The nebula fog and missle trails are really well done, as is lightning and flak around you. Unfortunately, wayyyy too slow to be playable. Turning 32 bit off helped a bit, but not much. 800x 32bit was playable, but still could use a few more fps. If we could get about 30% more speed out of the drivers, or I could get some cache and/or about another 100mhz, all would be good. As I expected, Glide was much more fluid, but the eye candy is noticeabley lacking.
Graphics aside, looks to be an excellent game. A3D isn't enabled in the demo, but the release version will support it. I'll have to dig out my old FS manuals, I forgot how to group my wingmen and targets onto the f5-f8 keys. Don't try playing this thing without at least a 4 button stick w/ hat. A throttle is a definite plus as well.
All in all, looks to be a good one. Well worth the 3.5 hour download.

    Overall 4.5/5 (dangit,put A3D in the demo)
/2 (anyone know how to do a 1/2 smiley?)

Hmm, you really though it was slow? I'll admit on the nebula mission when there are about 5+ ships or so in front of you it can get choppy, but that's to be expected. As far as speed is concerned, running directx at 1024x768 at 32-bit (with detail cranked) is very playable for me (I'd guess between 20 and 30 fps average). I'd have to say the framerate is equal or better than 12meg voodoo2 SLI, especially in the nebula with all those extra passes it has to make for tranparencies. I do have a g400max (not oc'ed) and little more mhz than you (celeron 300a @ 464), but all those factors shouldn't make a huge difference. For a game like freespace2 or any sort of sim, having 60 fps never seemed that big a deal. I'll admit for any intense fps, having 30+ fps is almost a competitive requirement in multiplayer... but for a sim, nah. Your focus is on usually on chasing one target at a time and not doing 360 degree spins to gib 5 guys in a room.
Descent3 is also a interesting comparison too. Running glide with SLI in d3 is second rate compared to the g400. At the same res (1024x768) with high detail, things that would normally slow the game down such as 32-bit color and the fact were also running a slower api such as directx, I get more framerate and smoother gameplay than my SLI. Granted, both are extremely playable in single player... with framerates between 20 and 40 fps average... depending on how complicated the scene is. So far, the g400 is pumping out some nice framerates for upcoming and latest 3d gaming titles... in my opinion at least

    -Absalom-

P.S. - Descent3 uses the old a3d 1.0 API which really really sucks. Not only that but it hits your framerate like crazy, no excuse. If the next patch for it comes out, it might actually be usuable but for now... the software sound engine in d3 is the leanest and meanest to use and the only way to go. Since Volition and Outrage are sister companies that share code and ideas... i'd say the sound engine in freespace is or will be nearly identicle to d3's. Unless they totally write freespace2 for a3d 2.0 API from the ground up, using a3d in it will basically be useless. The software sound engine in d3 does a real nice job as it is... so any hacks/patches for a3d into it will just make gameplay worse... a3d 2.0 is not something you just patch into a game. It's something that has to be dedicated into a game from the start.... *sigh*

My wish list: Get the g400 ICD working in tribes like the TNT2... please! It's really horrible right now...

i agree.... at least it did not take me forever to download the demo (thanks to cable modem) but right now there is TONS of major slowdown in the demo and i have the g400 max with a celery 333 oced to 504

I have to say that comparing the speed of my G400 to a V2 SLI rig is a joke (at least on my system anyway). 640x480 16 bit was choppy on my G400, while 800x600 was silky smooth on my single 12mb V2. I've asked questions in these forums with regards to my setup, and it pretty much comes down to the G400 blows chunks on cacheless Cels like mine. Maybe newer drivers will fix this..but as I have stated before...eye candy is only useful (or wanted) if the framerate is already acceptable.

joke eh? hehehe. Try out the new wicked3d minigl in quake3 (the high res optimized one) and compare your sli to your g400 at 1024x768 with default high quality settings. I gotta admitt, that's one hell of an improvement in fps over 3dfx's so called hack of an ICD... it's definately giving me more fps there than my g400. The g400's image quality still rules it though.

          Hmmm, back onto topic here...

"Hey those sure are some nice beam effects... oooh... pretty colors."

          "Doh!"

Actually, my Obsidian is an S12 (Single 12mb), not an X. I can only imagine how much faster an SLI rig would be
Surprisingly, Q3test is one of the few games that I am happy using the g400 in. I play over a dialup connection, and have to limit the framerate to ~30fps anyway. Even though the timedemos say I am getting ~24 fps at 1024x768, it still seems much faster.

Is there a way to display the fps? It seemed to run good on my PIII-500 G400 32MB.
