I finally got the dang demo downloaded. Living in the boonies with 56k dialup isn't all it's cracked up to be.
The graphics options let me select the usual Primary display/3dfx Glide, but also gave me the option of running the Primary display at 1024x and 32bit color options on both 1024 and 800x.
The user interface was polished up a bit, but everything should look familiar to anyone that played FS.
I fired it up at 1024x in 32 bit. Wow. Absolutely stunning. The nebula fog and missle trails are really well done, as is lightning and flak around you. Unfortunately, wayyyy too slow to be playable. Turning 32 bit off helped a bit, but not much. 800x 32bit was playable, but still could use a few more fps. If we could get about 30% more speed out of the drivers, or I could get some cache and/or about another 100mhz, all would be good. As I expected, Glide was much more fluid, but the eye candy is noticeabley lacking.
Graphics aside, looks to be an excellent game. A3D isn't enabled in the demo, but the release version will support it. I'll have to dig out my old FS manuals, I forgot how to group my wingmen and targets onto the f5-f8 keys. Don't try playing this thing without at least a 4 button stick w/ hat. A throttle is a definite plus as well.
All in all, looks to be a good one. Well worth the 3.5 hour download.
Overall 4.5/5 (dangit,put A3D in the demo)
/2 (anyone know how to do a 1/2 smiley?)
