Take a look at The Fight For a Cure to Cancer and tell me if we need to set up a team for that one.

There's enough for each to do
"Scientists have developed software which enables the spare capacity of PCs to be used to screen molecules for potential anti-cancer activity.

In effect, this will lead to the creation of a virtual super-computer that will be able to screen up to 250 million chemicals."

You can check out more at
United Devices and download the Client from there as well.

I'll look if we can set up a MURC group there. I'm downloading the program as we speak

As it looks like, there is an option to make teams. I'll have to have my nick and password in before I can start it, though.
The only problem I had thus far was that every client crashes when trying to login with a new nickname

I've been reading other peoples comments on it in the Ars forums.

This email from EasyRhino pretty much sums up peoples concerns with it.

      Dear Ms. Harrison,

I read your recent story regarding Oxford's new
      cancer-research distributed computing program, and
quickly downloaded the client and installed it on my
PC. Not only was I interested in the project, but I
was also curious to determine the relationship between
the Oxford researchers and cosponsers Intel and United
      Devices.

Upon downloading the client, I discovered that the
client is, for all I can tell, an unmodified version
of the standard United Devices client that can be
      downloaded from www.ud.com.

The United Devices client is one that does not allow
the user to choose which "payload" they run, but
instead runs one assigned by UD. Part of UD's
business model is to get paying customers to run
      commerical distributed computer applications as
payloads on their client, in addition to non-profit
      payloads.

To the best of my knowledge, there is method for a
user to ensure that they only run philantropic
      payloads.

Thus, I am concerned that the Oxford cancer research
is merely being used as a "hook" to get unwitting
computer users to dedicate their personal resources to
      the goals of unknown corporations.

This is especially curious since Intel lists as a
requirement to join their philantropic program is that
      the project be :

      "100% philanthropic. Being a 100% philanthropic
program means that that the program(s) run non-profit
projects all of the time. Programs that run commercial
projects "from time to time" are NOT considered 100%
      philanthropic."

I believe the situation merits further investigation.

      Thank you,
      Mark Kundinger

Hohum, no matter what I try, the download of the client stops at 95% and gives me a crashed client when I try to install it. Might be due to my non-payment then

        Strange?

If I was going to switch away from S@H this is the kind of project I would look at.
Cancer is something that affects everybody (maybe not directly) in their lives and cancer cases are always on the increase.
Of all the projects out there this would appear to be one of the most important.

I downloaded it from http://www.intel.com/cure/ and made my login. It´s dowloading data from the server now.

I tend to believe it because I don´t think Intel wouldn´t ever be in such a scam... a distributed computing project that adverses cancer fight and the data being crunched is something diferent...

If you guys wan´t to start I team count me in.

                I'll just re-add my support.
If anybody is interested in starting a team here I'll move my machines over.

Downloaded it last night and it is purring like a kitten. I don't see where it is using any resources at all, but my first job is 97% complete. I didn't see where we could put in a team name anywhere. Is the team something that we do for ourselves?

Well, no matter what version I download, they all hang after I try to login. I would've made a matroxusers team if only I could login and register my nick. It's not to be

                        Someone else better do it

windigo, I had trouble getting logged in as well. I found that it was my Zone Alarm causing the problem. I turned it off, logged in and then turned it back on. Everything is fine now. If you are using ZA check all of the boxes next to the UD Agent. If you aren't........... nevermind.

I just joined the team, so now there are 2 of us! Woo-Hoo!
