  • restricting CPU usage

    Hi,

how do i restrict seti (or any program from that matter) to use a maximum % of my CPU .... setting it to idle isn't the best idea ... since windows 98 does a poor job of distributing cpu power...

what about in linux is this possible?

    thx, Nehal

Do you notice ill effects from Win98's handling of Seti? I've never noticed Seti using CPU time when it was required elsewhere, memory on the other hand...

the reason i ask is sometimes kazaa goes to 100% cpu usage for no reason and stays until i restart client... bad bug :-(... leaving nothing for seti... if i could limit kazaa to only a certain percentage..... well.. u get the picture...

I noticed once that Kazaa has this "bulldog" anti-virus that downloads and runs every so often. Maybe that is what is causing ur 100% CPU usage? Just a thought.

actually im using kazaa lite... im not sure if a virus checker is in it... anyways after some time it goes to 100% and takes most of my CPU until i restart the program (ie it could stay like this for days if i kept it running)... this is true for kazaa lite or regular kazaa.... it is definitely a bug in the program... i doubt its anything to do w/virus checker

The CPU usage depends on the number of uploads/downloads you are doing! You could allways try running a freemem prog to see if it helps!
According to the latest official figures, 43% of all statistics are totally worthless...

Maybe you need to install Ad-Aware 5.83 to check and see if you have any "AD" programs running. And also check for trojans, cause its likely that you have downloaded one via Kazaa.

Its possible you might have a trojan. And what I meant to say in my original post was Kazaa Lite (1.7.1) as that is what I'm running. What version of Kazaa lite are you running? Maybe doing an un-install and then installing a newer version might fix your problem.

I agree with mmp121. Try both. Even uninstalling Kazaa will not get rid of spyware.

                        1. Uninstall Kazaa.
                        2. Install and Run Ad-Aware.
                        3. Install a fresh copy in a different directory.

Make sure to run Ad-Aware again after installing Kazaa Lite. Couldn't hurt.
