Man! I didn't want to get ito the beer thing, but you all forced me to

Oranjeboom and Heineken are made about 30 miles from eachother and taste very similar with that skunky(only part I like), no body, cardboard kinda taste. As far as the rest you described there dzeus, they are all pissy pilsner beers. They lack any body, color, and only taste good on very, very, very HOT days. I think they make those beers by drinking Guiness and using the last bit in the glass that noone drinks and fills it back up with water and bottles and sells it.
Now, for some REAL beers. Number one on the list has got to be Sierra-Nevada! A full-bodied, slightly-bitter, controlled-head kinda beer. It has remarkable flavor for an ale and just the right amount of drakness to it.
Other honorable mentions are Full Sail Ale, Pyramid Hefeweizen, Widmer Hefeweizen, Guiness, Murphy's Irish Stout, and some Samuel Adams. There are others, but I can't think of them right now.

Anyway, please don't take any of this offensively, I'm just having fun

      Dave
Ladies and gentlemen, take my advice, pull down your pants and slide on the ice.

Hi Helevitia, I think I know why you don't like these beers I like:

You should drink them cold (3-5 degrees celcius), and not warm ;-)

To be serious: I just like the pilsener kind of beer, which is quite different from other kinds of beer.

If you like what I dislike, then you should try Leffe Tripel (I think that's a Belgian beer); Then you should find that fantastic (now imagine what I think of it)

Beer!!! A subject dear to my heart. The reason you've got skunky Heineken (or Becks, et.al.) is due to the green glass bottles and the beer being left in the sun (e.g. loading docks). Brown bottle beers are less prone to this. When I have a beer outside the home, its never in a bottle, always tap. Sierra has been one of my favorite beers since its beginning. The cascade hops is what gives it that somewhat crisp, slightly bitter taste. I always enjoy their Christmas Ales, especially this last year (very hoppy). Luckily, Micro Breweries have done very well in the states the last 10+ years and some produce the best beer locally available. Ales, stouts, IPAs .... yummmm. I'm suddenly very thirsty.

Beer - now that's a topic worth discussing - way better than all that mushy stuff going on before... (Not to mention all that jibberish - someone should check the server for problems... )

Isn't Urquel a Chezc (sp) beer? I thought it was from some eastern bloc country. It is okay though a little light for my tastes.

The only American beer I'll consider drinking is Sierra. Aside from that, it's usually British beers (Heinekin when I'm in St. Martin). Bass is my current beer of choice.

For a long time, it was BBK but I can't find a bar in Chicago that serves it anymore

I don't care much for Guiness as I don't like my beer to taste like melted chocolate served on burnt toast.

Any weiss beer should be outlawed immediately. Who drinks beer with lemons, for crying out loud!

I've never been a fan of the Sam Adams stable of beers, though it was cool to sit in the brewery restuarant in Boston and pick from the 25 available beers...

Every once in a while Goose Island comes out with an 1800 Stout which is pretty good, but VERY strong. A couple of pints and just about any beer would taste good after that.

Anyway, have a good flight, Holly! I don't know how long the flight time is with the time difference, but it looks like a Long Damn Time (tm).

At least we know we have full run of the soapbox until at least Sunday evening...

              AHUM!

it's Heineken, and it is NOT a British beer, if you carefully read the label on the bottle, or properly read this thread. It's a Dutch Beer (and try Grolsch for a change... in my opinion the best Dutch beer :-)

Pilsener Urquel is indeed a Czechic (check the spelling) beer, and I think it's the best beer you can get :-)

Dave tries to make The Netherlands smaller than it is. Okay, we may not be a big country, but saying Oranjeboom and Heineken are made about 30 miles from eachother is a tad too much ...

Distance between Breda (Oranjeboom) and Amsterdam (Heineken) is about 106km (66.25 miles), for the most direct route.

I've promised Dave I'll try to get some Sierra-Nevada and try it. But of the foreign beers, I liked Labatt's ICE the most, drinking it from the icebox at a cool 3 degrees Celsius (37.4F)

Nice to see how even an "America goodbye" thread can be changed into something completely different

                Jord.

Just got done cutting down an old dead tree, having lunch, and drinking a nice cold Sierra!!!

Pilsener Urquel is considered one of the top beers in the world and one of the few real Pilsners ... brewed in Pilsen, Czechoslovakia. I tried a 20 percent alcohol "beer" when I was in Czechoslovakia in '70 ... yuccck ... all you could taste was the alchohol.

Andy, got to disagree with you on the stouts ... I love a sun-blocking black stout with toasted, chocolate overtones. Very hard to find a real good one.

                    dZ,

I know Heineken is Dutch - they were two unconnected thoughts that got joined when I forgot some punctuation...

At any rate, there's definately a difference in taste between the Heineken here in the states and that which we get in St. Maarten - maybe because we stay on the Dutch side and we get the regular Dutch version, which Jord says isn't as good? They come in 10oz bottles which kinda sucks but what are you to do?!? Funny to see the locals drinking the import Bud...

Headache beer, Andy... the following morning, or even after a couple of Heinekens, I get an enormous headache.

Grolsch, btw is good beer as well. I never said it wasn't, and I drink it all the time when I'm over in Enschede at friends.

Even their 2.5 Lemon is a good beer, at 2.5% alcohol by volume.

I grew up with Oranjeboom. My father worked first at the SKOL breweries (anyone in England remembering that?), after which it became Breda beer for a while, then Oranjeboom, when they merged with the Oranjeboom brewery in Rotterdam, (which is no longer functional, maybe that's what set Dave off to saying the 30 miles, still on the low side ), and died at the start of the take over by Allied Breweries from Belgium, which are still the present owners.

I stick with Oranjeboom. It's my brand. I'll try anything once, but if I don't like it, it'll be off my list.

Best thing I ever tried with a friend, was on vacation in England, getting the guy behind the tap to try to give us a beer with at least 2 fingers foam...
As most English beers, even some pilsners, from a tap are gravity beers (no added CO2), the effect of the 2 fingers foam was gone in about 5 seconds

But we had fun. Even the tapper tried his best for us silly Dutchmen

You gotta love us and our quirks

                      Jord.

OK, since beer is now the subject, I'll throw my votes out there.

                        1. Beck's Dark (Nothing beats it for me.. and I've never noticed anything "skunky" about it!)
                        2. Guinness (If you say yuck you're just a wuss )
                        3. Foster's on tap (There's nothing like going to the Outback and having prime rib and lobster tail with a 22oz Foster's!)
                        4. Bass Ale (good for a change sometimes)
                        5. Samuel Adams (If I have to pick something American.. and at the provincial grocery stores here, I often do.)

Heineken is OK, Grolsch is very good but too damned expensive here in the U.S.)I would love to try Pilsener Urquel and Sierra Nevada, but haven't seen it around locally.

                              Grolsch expensive?

how does 50 dollarcents sound to you for a bottle of 45 centiliters? :-)

As it was so sadly stated just recently, Denmark suck at football (at least we did in the Euro2000 championships), but we do know how to make beer

Carlsberg, the best beer in the world, in my humble opinion, at least
