Thanks everyone for this discussion - v.v. interesting!

If the idea of starting an anti-government protest movement that demonstrates in the street is something you can't even comprehend...
We europeans tried this the other week with our petrol blockades. It basically was us telling the government what we think of them. It worked (to a point) too - we crippled the country and Tony Blair couldn't do a thing. The news reported him when he spoke to the nation as 'Mr Blair spoke presidential style to the nation' anyway, you could say that we had a freedom to do whatever we wanted there, but after a week, Tony Blair got scared and threatened us with the Army - so yes, we don't have a freedom to do what we like. But! This isn't a bad thing necessarily - Gurm - you gave a long list of freedoms you have, but in most cases, I completely fail to see why you'd want half of them unless you were completely off your rocker!! I'd rather be in this country and live our caged lives if it means the well being and safety of the public at large. You try being a Nazi here - you'll be locked up!

I agree that it's just the way that our two nations have grown up differently - one is not more 'evolved' than the other, (although that could be argued), we're just different.

I know though, that I'd rather live in relative safety (although that's not true for all of Europe) than have the knowlege that I am 'free-er' (sp? ). It's all in how we have been brought up. If I were american through and through, I'd be on your side of the fence...

You hit the nail right on the head. Unless you are 'american through and through' there is no way that you can understand why we are so passionate about our freedoms. And one of those freedoms is the right to bear arms as granted to us by the Constitution of the United States.

Yup. Case closed. Y'all finally got it. You don't understand why we want these freedoms, and we have trouble seeing why you DON'T want them.

So there is the crux of the situation. Case closed.

Okay, so maybe it won't. Case closed.

This has been very interesting, I must say... However, it gives a whole new meaning to Gurm's signature.

Whether forum citizens have the right to bear arms or not, you'd best be careful because _I_ have... (*cock*)(*cock*) a BOOM STICK. And I'll use it.

                      Gurm,

I never said I didn't have access to a gun, I said I didn't need to carry one. People naturally leave me alone

I'm glad to see the liberal wing of the MURC chime in--finally! Recently, the Soap Box has become the US Conservative Polemic Box. I certainly like my more conservative fellow MURCERs, and this is certainly the forum for conservative polemics (or any kind of polemics), but I miss the old "cheese 'n porn" days. Everyone seems really mad and sometimes dissenters are treated bady (until Joel shows up ).

I'm not asking for peace, love, or understanding. Just a little more cheese and porn.

To the Europeans here, many, many Americans believe in some form of gun control: hand gun registration in particular. I'd personally like to see a ban on handguns, but it's not going to happen. The "cold dead hand" minority will prevail. They may have the Second Ammendment on their side, and it's better to live with the guns than ammend the Bill of Rights. I do think we'll see more and more regulation, however, and I can certainly live with that.

The Constitution's wording is a bit tricky as well. I've always had the feeling that no one, on either side, wants to really give it a test. Also, there are literally millions of guns in the US. An outright ban on anything beyond semi-automatic weapons would go nowhere. It would be prohibition all over again, and the actual collection of all these weapons would be physically impossible. (And once collected, where would we put them. )

Whoever decided to let the IRS manage this must be be insane. They are short-staffed as is, and I have serious doubts they could handle it. More importantly, I suspect the people most passionate about gun ownership rights are the most suspicious of the IRS. It's a big steamy pile of political dog doo, and I doubt the US Senate is willing to step in it.
