Andrew, I think BEDMAS would be better - but I was taught BODMAS, standing for:

Brackets, Powers of, Division/Multiplication, Addition/Subtraction.

As for fancy sums, how's about this:

I can't do the fancy symbols, so with the bold A's, turn them upside down (no really!) and make the E's back to front.
