I hate virus writers

I hate em I have to keep updating all the virus dat files on my computers every few days. At work I have to install crappy mcafee virus checker that is just as likely to take down windows when they release an update.
why can't these sad gits do something useful like boil there heads?

Solution: Install a better virus checker. Like Norton, for example. McAfee has sucked since they were found by an appeals court to have stolen all their antiviral code from Norton and were forced to rewrite from scratch.

Unfortunately, NAI, the owners of McAfee, also own Dr. Solomon. I think they use the same code now, too.

BTW, mcafee virusscan 4.5 is much better than older versions. It's pretty stable (hasn't crashed on me yet), and you don't have to reboot to update dats in Win9x anymore.

I use Nortons at home but I'm still having to download new updates twice or three times a week.
At work we have a license with mcafee so we're stuck with that crap. Yep they're are the same as Dr solomon.

We rolled out Norton Anti-Virus corporate edition here at work about two months ago.
This product is just amazing!
We use a server system that pops along to the Internet and downloads dat & program updates.
It then automatically rolls the updates out to all the clients.
No PC's require a re-boot, even the Win9x ones.
As a laptop user adds his/her laptop back onto the network it automatically has it's dat files updated.
This product really is the be all and end all of corporate anti-virus product.
Ooo, and due to it's open file management and good real-time scan engines it can even be used on a very busy Win2k server.

The only problem I've had with norton is with it's firewall products not always letting the updates download which is rather amusing.

Personally, I've always used Norton AntiVirus, ever since its 1.0 days on a 5.25" floppy! I didn't realize that there was such widespread hatred for McAfee. My company has McAfee as the corporate standard, and it leaves a foul taste in my mouth.

But there's one thing bugging me: Why do we need antivirus- and firewallsoftware anyway? Why doesn't everyone just keep their hands off of other peoples computers?

Yeah, but if you scan your hard drive I guarantee you'll find a few viruses and Trojans in there, or do you never connect to the Internet?

As for McAfee, they used to be the best. Norton had great utilities and mediocre antivirus. Then, when Norton came up from behind, McAfee hired away one of their engineers and stole ALL of their code.

So, about two years ago (give or take - my memory is a bit spotty on the subject) a federal court ordered that McAfee completely rewrite their antivirus code from the ground up.

Since then, it has been slow, bulky, and icky. Go figure.

Soon after Win2k came out we asked McAfee about Win2k support.
They told us the latest version of their software was compatible, but there would be a patch within a month to clear up a few 'issues'
We decided to be safe rather than sorry and waited the month.
Low and behold 3 weeks later the patch appeared with a nice on-screen message telling us 'Fully tested with Win2k'
So, we download it and rolled it out to a load of machines.
WORST MISTAKE OF OUR LIVES!!
Click start, wait 5 seconds, move pointer over the start menu, attempt to start application, wait 10 seconds.
Go into Control Panel, wait 20 seconds, control panel opens.
McAfee's reply to our support request, we didn't know about that!
2 Weeks later, they e-mailed us a fix.
Turn off e-mail scanning!
Oh, that's a good plan, turn off scanning on one if not the most likely way of getting a virus!
1 week later, removed McAfee from all PC's and bought ourselves a site license for NAV, never looked back.

NAV use to be good. But as with most software it keeps getting more and more bloated. I found www.AVP.ch about a year ago and have to say it is the best Antivirus program I've ever used. Small efficient and effective.
