  • Has Matrox started a downward spiral?

It sure seems that way to me, taking the past year or so into account.
We have the G450.. ok.. it was targeted at the buisness end, and substantially slower than a G400MAX. Numerous issues with games and OpenGL speed issues throughout the incremental driver releases. Dualhead on G400 is visually superior to G450 in several cases. Mass-exodus of engineering talent to NVidia.
Then there is the virtual snubbing of Matrox video editing fanatics with the announcement of the end of MJPEG support. Refusal to talk about any upcoming products. "G800" or whatver it was scrapped.
Apparent severe delays with the G550, and upon release it looks quite a bit 'less-than stellar' in the performance department. Talk of Matrox not focusing on OpenGL driver development very much. Headcasting.. enough said there.
Now more delays with the final driver release for MJPEG Marvel users.

Matrox has dropped the ball big time on customer relations quite a few times recently, and they don't seem to be making very much technological progress with their boards (still using the G450 core with 64-bit memory bus), and drivers are going down the tubes. Whats going on M?

Yes, they are spiraling downwards as they dig the basement vault larger to accommodate the money they are making

They have hit the rock bottom and have started to dig.
Someday, we'll look back on this, laugh nervously and change the subject.

I think you forgot one thing Rylan, they couldn't have possibly just been working on the G550 this while time, now could they?

My guess will be Q1 2002, lol! I know, but it's fun to speculate. It will be called the "Gee, All of your graphics assess belong to us!".

I created my digimask here at work today.
One of the other programmers came in and
                saw it.
Pretty soon the entire office was in here
                oohing & aahing.
Lots of "Man! I gotta get one of those cards"
                type comments.
Judging by the reaction that I saw today,
I think Matrox may have a bigger hit going
                than you guys realise.

Nah, I think that's just geek factor. I really don't think HeadCasting will take off (well, maybe for porn). Someone else made the point that businesses usually have broadband for real videoconferencing.
And if all your co-workers "gotta get one of those cards", do they know how fast it will be otherwise? I.E. will they be willing to replace their GeForce with it? If they wanted the visual quality, they already own a Matrox card. If they wanted gaming speed, this might be seen as a "downgrade".
Gigabyte P35-DS3L with a Q6600, 2GB Kingston HyperX (after *3* bad pairs of Crucial Ballistix 1066), Galaxy 8800GT 512MB, SB X-Fi, some drives, and a Dell 2005fpw. Running WinXP.

                    chuck

PS These are mostly young programmers.
They all play games but none have GForces.
One has a Matrox card (Mytique 220 + RR) he uses for vid. capture.
Mostly they are interested in feature sets, not Q3 frame rate as an end in it's self.

                          Hey cjolley,

I have run into the same thing among my colleagues at work that you have. With them seeing the potential of this technology and caring less if Q3 runs at 100fps or 50fps.
