  • Matrox has layed off 10% of its work force.

this news is from a very reliable source (my friend , who works at Matrox!)

I was surprised by the news since Matrox is the first Graphics company among ATI and Nvidia to layoff workers. It seems like they have layed off over 100 employees! ( how many employees do they have in totall , anyway!) I know for fact that ATI is still hiring ! Anyone know if Nvidia has gone into a hiring freeze. I have also heard romours that Matrox DX8 chip will not hit the market before XMass which is a bummer! I have also heard from an ATI employee that top level ATI designers already know that the new Matrox Chip will beat R200 so the fact that ATI will make enough money on that is still in Jepeordy.
So it all depends on when Matrox can go into production!

I have heard some stuff about the new ATI project called A4! anyone knows any detail!
-<= Its all about point of view ....

in the words of the great forum moderator, Ant...

OFF TO THE CRYSTAL BALL WITH YOU!!!

From a veteran MURC'er, you won't get comment from anyone who is in the know. They are all under NDA so they cannot comment. As for your rumor...if Matrox can release a card that makes ATi feel shakey at the knees...then I'll have a new video card in my computer next year

But until it is official from Matrox, it's all heresay.

        Layoffs wouldn't surprise me

It's been a long time since Matrox came out with a cutting edge video product. HP's been in comparatively better shape, but we just announced 6,000 layoffs (but we don't know who yet).
Gigabyte P35-DS3L with a Q6600, 2GB Kingston HyperX (after *3* bad pairs of Crucial Ballistix 1066), Galaxy 8800GT 512MB, SB X-Fi, some drives, and a Dell 2005fpw. Running WinXP.

Judging from the average intelligence of citizens in Arkansas, I would say that after reading Turbo's comments I think Matrox will be in superb position for coming out with a killer card.

                Ok Rags,
After reading your reply I have considered your point.
In the interest of fairness, I concede to your opinions.

                I leave in peace.

                  I Don't Get It.

Why do people seem to think that they have to stick with a brand of video card when that brand doesn't meet their needs? Also why do peope seem to think that since they have made their decision to use a certain brand that somehow they need to call other users who stick to that brand "biased" "groupies" "zealouts" etc.? Is it just because in their mind that they see truth and no one else could possibly have a need or want they are unwilling to give up?

Turbo, I know it has been a long time since Matrox has served up a good gaming solution. I agree that it has taken too long. But there are reasons for the delay and I don't like some of them either. But I do also use other cards extensively and don't limit myself to use just Matrox cards. Sure I have stuck with a Matrox card in my primary machine for years now simply because I NEED some of the advantages it offers me. And believe me these advantages are what keeps me using them.

Turbo, I am sure whatever message you deleted last night that CJ responded to was a real jewel. It says a lot that you deleted because you won't stand behind what you post or that somoene else had to delete it.

Have you ever thought about what ATI is doing and its significance to Matrox's situation? How many times in the past did ATI have even a near top notch gaming solution? The answer, of course, is NEVER. Now they have the Radeon and a lot of gamers are now using it and looking forward to the R200. This little "Either tell me something now, or I am going to jump ship..." crap is getting really long in the tooth. The fact is that even if Matrox releases a card next year and it's twice as fast as other soluitons then people will flock to it. ATI is proof. Crap drivers, crap cards, and crap support, yet they sell their Radeon now in numbers. Matrox consumer cards (not incuding the marvel and RRS) have always had top notch driver support with the exception of the OpenGL thing, top Tech Support for years now (where you can actually get your card replaced if it needs. Try that with other companies), and their cards have all been of relative high quality for what the price is. So a nice gaming solution being released would be a no brainer decision for most people as they can be assured of what they are getting. I think big M will surprise us all personally, but the only ones who know for sure are the big boys at M and I never know what these guys are thinking and can have a hard time seeing their reasoning. We will see.

But in the waiting time, I will use my Matrox card to get my work done and will continue to use my other rigs for gaming and tweaking.

                    PREACH ON BROTHER RAGS!!!!

My Prophet 4500, Kyro II card is the first non-Matrox card to EVER grace the insides of my personal home computer. I'm not ashamed, I suddenly don't hate Matrox. My G400 became too underpowered for the primary purpose of my computer...gaming. And most of it is online 3D gaming. So when it was upgrade time, I bought a Prophet 4500. So what?

If Matrox comes out with a killer DX8 card, will I dump my Prophet 4500? Probably...I'll just wait and see and be happy with my Kyro II card for now.

Yes, I´m a Matrox fan also, and I moved on because my Vannilla G400 just didn´t make it on my gaming needs.

And I think KyroII cards are also a great option for Matrox users. Top notch image quality (Hercules). Man I saw Collin McRae 2 today on a no name Geforce MX and I realized how I´m spoiled by Matrox and Kyro rendering quality.

So far, my G400 hasn't hindered me enough to warrant me buying a new card. I've been contemplating the KyroII, but with the Messiah coming (theoretically) in Q1 2002, I'll probably tough it out until I see what M can serve up.

I see I'm not the only guy who lovingly held on to his G400 as long as he possibly could.

P.S. Radeon drivers are NOT CRAP ANYMORE. Get with the program. They haven't been crap in a long time. Hell, NEVER since I bought my Radeon have my drivers given me grief. And thats in a VIA chipset dual CPU overclocked rig with an SB Live in it (recipe for disaster).

Yes, the win2k drivers for the Radeon are STILL crap. I cannot use it in my primary machine because of their crappiness.

                              Rags:

I haven't had *any* video-related problems yet, and you'd figure if anyone was gonna have video problems, it'd be me considering my system specs. I admit to not upgrading my drivers much since I'm not running the *latest* drivers, but I've reached the point now where there ain't no use updating the drivers if everything works like it should. Whats so bad about the drivers in your rig?
