NEW YORK (CNN) -- Queens police confirm an aircraft crashed Monday in the Far Rockaways neighborhood of the New York City borough.

The spokesman could not confirm the type of plane but said it crashed in the Rockaways at 122nd Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard.

WCBS-TV reported that the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said it was an American Airlines 767 presumably on approach to John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York. The station showed pictures of a huge plume of smoke.

(CBS) A plane crashed Monday morning in the Queens section of New York, and buildings reportedly were on fire in the neighborhood.

The plane crashed shortly after 9 a.m. and thick, black smoke could be scene in televised reports. Thick black smoke can be seen in the neighborhood of Beach Street and 129th street. Reports say there are a number of buildings on fire in the neighborhood.

The FAA said the plane was flying New York to Santo Domingo. The FAA said the plane was American Airlines flight 587, and it was an Airbus A-300, twin-engine plane.

Bill Schumann of the Federal Aviation Administration said there was no immediate indication of what caused the crash. He said the plane could hold up to 275 passengers, and crashed about five miles from Kennedy Airport.

Mayor Giuliani was headed to the scene.

All three of New York City's airports were closed. All bridges and tunnels in and out of the city were also closed.

I just read on a german news site that it looks like it was only a technical defect, ie. one of the engines broke before/during/after take off ...

Talk about strange coincidences, 2 accidents with commercial flights in a short timespan...

Crash site #2 is where the engine fell off and crashed into a boat parked in someones backyard. This accident smells of a broken engine mount or similar... and alot of lives lost

It was Alec that said "2 accidents with commercial flights", I was curious if there was another crash recently I hadn't heard about. Here in Wichita we had a KC-135 (air refueling tanker) crash into a residental area back in '65, so that kind of accident isn't totalty unheard of.

What's really annoying is the news anchors all asking people "Will you fly in a plane again?". That's like showing someone pictures of every person killed in one day by car accidents and then asking them if they want to drive anymore, what do you think their opinion's gonna be?

First my condolaces for all the people who have lost their lives on the flight and the people on the ground who have been again hit by another tragedy.
Apparentley the area is where many of the emergency people who were involved in the Sept 11th disaster lived.

Everybody at work went suddenly rather quiet and I don't mean this in a nasty disrespectful way, reliefed when it seems that it was mechanical failure rather than another terrorist strike. God doesn't the world suck when you end writing things like this.

Sorry, I was talking about September 11th, but of course it was not an accident. Given a little bit of thought into this, by belief is that today´s "accident" was not just an accident. Smells like sabotage to me.

Curiously enough, on September 11th, I woke up 15 mn after the crash... today happened the same... (I´ve been waking up late - around 2.15 pm)

LS, did you hear it on the news or HEAR it as it happened?

I can't see why more jet engines don't have problems with sea birds at airports like JFK or Logan or LAX.. they oughta have some sort of nose cone on the engine that deflects anything away from the rotor blades.
