It's long been held that in order for a person to be complete, they need to sound in body and mind. Sports are a way for the body to keep up with the mind. Are a lot of sports players dumb? Sure.
I played football, basketball, baseball, and I also graduated the top of my class, am a national merit scholar, and got to pick pretty much where I wanted to go to school based on academic achievements. Sports were a big part of keeping me in line and in shape. I made a lot of good friends, and it kept me in shape physically. It also taught me dedication to follow through with goals and achieve the best I could.
There are statistics that show children who participate in sports through school are less likely to get into trouble, are less likely to kill themselves, get better grades, and earn more money as adults. There wouldn't be the interest in the sports if there were no professional teams for us.
