For reducing long-distance commuters....the government could also offer property tax breaks if all the employed people within a household live within a certain distance of their primary source of income (or else they'll get jobs at the local quickie and claim they live next door to work)....

Why do today what you can put off until tomorrow? But why put off until tomorrow what you can put off altogether?

      - Supervised and Policed school busses to reduce the morning/evening school run.
Add the word compulsory and I agree completely

The amount the British motorist pays on Road Tax and for petrol could ensure we have the best road system in the world.

Sadly 'Road Tax' isn't really Road Tax at all anymore, its car tax. Road Tax implies that the money is actually spent maintaining roads. Fuel here costs an absolute fortune (approx $3.80 / US gallon), yet our roads are absolutely abysmal compared to those in continental Europe.

Ok so most of Europe chooses to collect money for its roads differently, via tolls. At least that money is actually spent on maintaining roads though.

The UK collects its taxes differently.

It all goes into one big pot. National Insurance, Income Tax, Drink, Cigarettes, Fuel, has done for years.

We have one of the LOWEST direct taxation (income tax) that I know of (in europe), and the reason, we tend to pay at the point of delivery.

Tax can be raised in any way a government sees fit, the overall tax burden is LOWER in the UK for Joe Average than elseware in europe. I am all in favour of tax at the point of delivery. (you could be a pizza delivery man in the South of Ireland and be paying almost 40% tax, with NO real NHS.

I would rather be presented with choicees. If I have to work and party 40 miles from my home, I can move (Ive done that before). MY choice. When my income rose, I could move to areas where I had to travel to get to work, but the burden was easier. My CHOICE.

I am NOT saying its the correct way to be, but it is A way to be.

Well the Max morgage I can get is £46,000 most of the houses round here are £80,000 and rising rapidly. So moving isn't really an option in my case.
