Naw Dan, he'd probably stick him in a box while blowing herbal smoke into it

I see it did not take you long to lose your patience with me Gurm, and verbally attack me.

Is this your length of patience with a child as well?

No, I imagine he'd attempt to "reason" with the child. I've seen this type in the store. The kid is pitching a fit, and the parent says "if you're good, daddy will buy you a candy bar".

What have you taught the child, with its limited capacity for reason?

Dancray, I live in a society where parents feel the way you do. I now have children that feel it is OK to punch me in the testicles during class as they will never be punished for it.

It's late at night, I'm tired, but I do have a question for you, when exactly does your child learn Newtons (2nd -I think) law, for every action there is an equal and oposite reaction?

I've dealt with this type of person a hundred times. Every single time it turns out that they're great at handling 5-year-olds, and NOT so great at handling 2-year-olds.

Your job, until they are old enough to reason (3+), is to keep them alive. This includes preventing them from killing themselves.

And sadly, you CANNOT reason with them. I would rather teach my child that trying to touch the stove is bad by slapping his hand than by allowing him to get 3rd degree burns.

And frankly, my pediatrician agrees. Most do.

Your approach is dated. It went out with the earthy-crunchy happy-lovey-nice-nice parenting of the 70's and 80's.

Oh c'mon Joel - he's indicative of the problem with society. We have an entire generation (or two) of people who don't think that there are any rules!

Hey Joel, I would suggest not doing that... I've met you, your wife and kids... know how you raise them and yes they are good kids for the same reasons as stated by many of us.

Gurm, I agree with almost everything you've said, but unfortunately some people take longer than 3 years to acquire the capacity of reason. Look at poor Dan, there.. still trying after all these years. I'd bet money he was never spanked when he deserved to be as a child.

I was spanked as a child and it sure the hell didn't do any harm to me. For some children (like myself at that young age) they need some kind of hard disipline to get a lesson through their thick head. I know for a fact that when my parents disiplined me, it was for my own good, even though I could get pretty mad sometimes about it. But when you get in trouble, you usually know you are getting into it, and what if your parents didn't do anything about it but just sit you down and try to explain to you that what you did was wrong (I'd probably laugh). Well, I know I'd probably grow up to be a little "stinker" if it would have been that way.

But then again my mother was a fifteen year old French prostitute named Chloe with webbed feet....

I'm not saying that I don't disagree. Hell I recieved a number of sapnkings as a kid even when I was suppose to be old enough to be reasoned with and I truned out to be OK. Yes I do spank my kids when I feel that it is appropiate.

All I'm asking is that we cut out the personal insults againist dancry, because it is forum policy, even though I realize that he started it, although very subtilely.

I still remember the only time i ever managed to break the wooden spoon, my mum and I were stuffing around and she very lightly tapped me on the elbow. (about the same strength that you would tap the bottom of a beer can to settle it before opening) spoon had a weak point and went flying in two directions
