Things that annoy me about fat cats.

      1) Always knock the worker down to lowest percentage wage increase while giving them selfs huge increases via every loop hole.

      2) Ignorant B!"£$%ds who mostly haven't got a clue about how the product is made or any inkling how long it really takes.

      3) If the companies doing badly due to their mistakes they still give themselves big increases and then sack half the workforce.

      4) If they found out to be daft they still get a huge golden handshake and walk out into another company which they proceed to wreck.

Now this thread has drifted somewhat.

          RichL,

We know ALL about your problems, and they have precious little to do with anything that happened to you in your childhood... if you get my meaning.

While I basically agree to your reasoning I'm afraid we miss one important point.
Not every parent enjoyes the higher IQ you do. Not every person has a character strong enough to restrict him/herself to only "necessary" spanking when dealing with bad/naughty/spoilt/untalented children.
The majority of parents are normal (not ideal) people with their merits and demerits and (thus) tend to abuse their parental rights. That's the main concern as I understand it.

Ok, this is a good place to rant about my most hated new show... "Bear in the Big Blue House" This program DOES teach good things to kids. Teamwork, honesty, etc. BUT, it also rather subtly teaches them to disrespect authority. Consider - "Bear" is the parent figure in the house. Every episode, Bear has a plan for the day. This plan is immediately and fatally interrupted, every episode, by the other characters - the "children" characters. Bear then spends the entire episode catering to the rugrats' WANTS. Not their NEEDS. He never does what he intended to do. Some episodes, he gets something special in the mail. Without fail, this special item (which ostensibly he has ordered) is commandeered by the kids, who play with it, abuse it, and if they bother to return it, do so in an unusable state. What does this teach kids, in its subtle way? It doesn't matter what your parents say, want, or do. If you bug them long enough they will do whatever you want them to. - Gurm

As stated before, Bugs Bunny/Warner Brothers is what i was raised on...........
the cartoons were realistic enough to show action/consequences of any good/bad deed

Spankings were justified in my home for failure to recognize mother's authority but were few and far between (growing up that is)

As for my kids, they are old enough to know just from tone in my voice that there is an issue

having 3 kids i have learned that punishments are different for each child

time out for one does not work for the other 2

scolding for one makes no effect on others (except for entertainment value)

but I have only rarely had to resort to physical punishment and only in the most extreme situations

but the biggest help as i was growing up was the knowledge that the whole family (grandparents etc..) were involved with enforcing punishments

My soon-to-be-Ex dont believe in family support that way and encourages the 2 younger ones that anything that happens at my place WONT effect them at hers

(until last month when they had issues up there and DEMANDED I support THEIR point of view in regards to the youngest)made for a fun conversation

but nowadays the kids out there know no limits, and are VERY intune to the legal system that protects thier asses in all bad situations

single families are strained as the absense of 1 parent weakens the arguement that the parent is always right.................makes for hard feelings between the authoritave parent and the child as the absent parent (if involved) will always be the "cooler" one to be with (less restrictive/more fun/more leeway)

Do I approve of spankings? YES when absolutely needed
In the state I live in spankings are allowed (1 hit) more than one can be abuse but depends on the situation
Better to let one think you are a fool, than speak and prove it

                      • Generalizations support the argument you're trying to make. The trick is to make your generalizations sound so reasonable that people take them as moot.

                            • Yeah, I love the current model of thought...

"Things have gotten worse than they were. Maybe we're doing something wrong? No, it must be a NEW problem."

There are no NEW problems. Music doesn't make kids kill people - Beethoven was reviled, because his music was considered to be too sexual and it was claimed that it incited women to acts of indecency.

Movies don't make kids kill people - if they did, those of us who saw Freddy Krueger as early teens would have been permanently scarred and would be out offing people.

TV doesn't make kids kill people - the news has been terribly violent for years now.

Video games don't make kids kill people - if video games influenced our actions, most of us would now be running around in a maze eating little round dots.

It's just foolishness. The same problems exist that have always existed, but society's methods of dealing with them have changed - and not for the better.

But instead of realizing that it's US who have changed, we presume that there are NEW forces creating these NEW problems. Hence we blame things that we don't understand. I think you'll find that the only REAL proponents of the "video games make kids kill" arguments are those who didn't have video games as kids. In other words, those from my parents' generation (late 40's).

Those who believe that movies cause kids to kill can probably be traced mostly to the censorship board, most of whom are 60-year-old freakies who still think that movies in color are a HORRIBLE idea.

Add to these groups a small but vocal minority of Dancray-types, who have been misinformed by a horribly liberal-biased media and educational system.

                              *shrug*

It's all related. Take "new math" for example. Why do we have a nation full of people who can't do simple math? We went to the outlet stores the other day, and they handed us a sheet that listed how much each "percent" off meant for a particular dollar amount. A simple spreadsheet that had percentages on the top and dollars down the side, and you could see that 20% off of $50 made the sale price $40.

Of course, if you knew math at all, you wouldn't NEED this sheet. Julie, who is a smart girl and who I love very dearly, NEEDS this sheet. She can't do simple math beyond addition and subtraction without a piece of paper or a calculator. Why? Because she was never taught it, and there is no time for me to teach her now.

I was taught it - not by the schools. Heavens, no. Math wasn't even in the curriculum until 2nd grade, when they made us do math with beans, bears, and colors. Never numbers. Numbers were too complex. Numbers were for geeks.

My PARENTS made me learn math. Good thing they did, too - as I have now learnt more theoretical math than most math majors ever will.

What caused this horrifying trend? "New Math". It was introduced in the 70's, and permeated our schools until only just recently when it was finally purged (well, it's still around in some areas). It was in its heyday during my brother's time in school. The same second grade teacher that taught me math with beans and bears taught him math with COLORS. Nobody has ever been able to satisfactorily explain to me what "math with colors" entails. But presumably it's very intuitive... albeit not particularly USEFUL.

But is this the fault of the educational system, per se? No, it's the fault of this permeating force in our society to try to find new and interesting solutions to what we perceive as "new" problems.

Add to that the complete unwillingness of anyone to take personal responsibility for anything nowadays, and you can see how awful this gets.

Ok, I've been rabbiting on quite long enough, and this is quite rambling - can you tell I've been reading the final posthumous Douglas Adams book? It's quite good, I can tell you. Go get it - "The Salmon of Doubt" in hardback at your local bookseller today.
