IMO, smoking is a disgusting habit. With the healthcare line though if we take it to it's full extent thought we may all be taking just soylant green because everything has a high tax on it. That includes all forms of alchohol, chocolate, ice cream, candy, hot dogs, hamburgers, steak, . . . . Ooops, there goes the fourth of July picnic!

I've NEVER seen effective enforcement of the "ban on smoking in public places". When it's illegal in a building, the smokers huddle around the door, forcing everyone who enters or exits to breathe it in. When it's illegal outside, they huddle INSIDE the door, forcing everyone who enters or exits to breathe it in.

And if you're going to try to convince me that there exists a municipality or state in this country where it's illegal both INDOORS AND OUTDOORS, I'll laugh at you. The smokers ignore the rules.

It's an ADDICTION. As such, making rules limiting it is a silly concept. I say tax 'em into submission. Bump it up to $10 a pack. Make it a federal tax.

Wow, I totally agree with you Gurm. You cant tell people what to do, only make it worth their while to do what you want. I know a number of people who quit because of the cost.

It's that moderation thing that is the sticking poing. Everything is safe in moderation. Smoking is. So is eating junk food. Hey, a tiny ammount of arsnic wont kill you. So, yeah, most things are "safe" until Joe Public decides to use them.

What you have to remember is that I only have an opinion about things I know about - and if I know about something, I know ENOUGH about it to form an opinion. And most of my opinions are strong ones.

Now, there are things I don't have an opinion about... like which American mid-sized sedan is best. Or which "Footsie-ball" team will win the "superior bowling league tourney".

Actually, there are LOTS of things I don't have an opinion about. Look at all the threads I don't post in. I read the entire forum multiple times daily, and post only a fraction of that time.

But this particular time I speak from personal experience. Julie can't inhale cigarette smoke any more - since she got pregnant with Logan it has made her violently ill. So I have a personal stake in avoiding it.

Why do smokers get fag breaks. What about us Boozers can't we have a beer break??

To solve smoking in the workplace put in sprinkler system and then if they smoke they'll get the shit kicked out of them by everyone else for soaking them. If they leave the building they got to clock out and lose pay.

from my past experience as a smoker in the work place here in the states.. everyone got 2 15 minute breaks a day.. the smokers smoked on there break.. everyone else usually read or ate.

Where I work, we don't get cigarette breaks. We get 2 breaks of 15 minutes. If you choose to go out an smoke, you go smoke. People that don't smoke don't get their breaks revoked.

From when I worked at Absolute Quailty and even at Wal-Mart, the smokers called them smoke breaks and others copied. At AQ, we even had a setting in the call software for "Smoke Breaks" since it caught on so much even though they were regular breaks. Though there were people, as with anything, that abused it and this was the perceived notion of smoke breaks that were actually against the rules. Most of us non-smokers did not take the breaks unless it was real slow and even the smokers took very quick breaks when there was enough work to do. It all depended on work loads.

Now if only I never had to work at someone's desk that dipped.
