From its brightness, astronomers estimate it is about two kilometres wide, large enough to cause continent-wide devastation on Earth.
Now, what if it has a minimal albedo? A big, black evil looking chunk of coal-black rock that just doesn't reflect that much light? It might be much larger than 2km then. Maybe 20km.. if it hits in the right spot, this could puncture the Earth's crust and create a huge caldera.. a mega-volcano to plague us all for eons after the initial dust has settled in a couple hundred years or so..

Personally, I liked /.'s commentary on the article.

The BBC article's headline (and accompanying illustration) are more alarming than the story itself seems to warrant: this asteroid has been given a 0.06 on the Palermo technical scale, which means it shouldn't bump getting run over by a llama off your list of worries.

You know, in some sick and twisted way I'm kinda hoping that that asteroid WILL hit the Earth. We need a change.

I'd even settle for seeing it hit our moon, that would make quite the awesome show.

So what you're saying is that life has been just a little dull these days. The world needs a good swift kick in the ass. Kinda like what God needed yesterday. Just don't tell him I said that.

Yup, but unfortunetely it's not an asteroid that is going to change that!

I knew it. Kicking God up the arse wasn't a good idea. Now he's going too tortures for the next seventeen years wondering if this thing is going to hit us or not.
