isn´t jupiter all atmosphere and nothing else?
Taking a ship into that planet would be the coolest thing ever. Especially if the ship was the Millenuim Falcon!
I want to be the first guy to find out if the planet has a core! (or life!)Titanium is the new bling!

Oh why not try something bigger than Jupiter how about a black hole.

But you also may find an alternative Universe if you play around witha black hole.

Well if you flip into an alternative universe you may end up being uncrushed. This is getting silly isn't it?

Who really knows what would happen, maybe it just opens a doorway into sub-space and you end up dying of old age in some sort of "void".
But yeah, you right, this is getting a little silly.

Where's the solar maid? She's supposed to be here by now! She 1034 years late! (which is like 5 minutes in universe time)Originally posted by Ant
The solar system is one hell of a crowded place take a look at this

It don’t have to “hit” itOriginally posted by RedRed
You are assuming that we could do a number of things Gurm
1 Hit it! Not as easy as it sounds! Assuming that this thing has a relative velocity (to the missile flying twords it) of perhaps 200 000 KPH!!! that is a hard target! its only 2 miles across

Please study your physics a little more, think rocket engines and you’ll get it2 The structure of it. If it is made up of a loose collection of debris, your explosion will have negligable effect - the micro gravity of the chunk could re claim as much as 90% of the mass..... If its solid - you dont want 1000 50Meter bits hitting the earth in a spray - probably more damage!
Says Who?3 you have to develop a nuke which could hit this surface - and SURVIVE long enough to explode- no current tech could do that....
Again, think rocket engine4 You are assuming that it is not a black body and 20 times the size. If it is we are truly shagged.
I think I already covered this in the soup can example5 The size of a nuke big enough to vaporise 2 cubic kilometres of a solid material could be bigger that the worlds COMBINED nuke stockpile!!!
(not to mention what Gurm mentioned
)
It still only has to get within reasonable distance and detonate!6 where Drizzt is coming from is Valid - if a bit wrong.. You can’t detonate the nuke NEAR the asteroid - you need a mass to react it off against - spraying the asteroid in hard radiation won’t deflect or destroy the asteroid. You probably couldn’t build a missile with enough reaction mass to sacrifice in your nuke to deflect the asteroid significantly. Remember you need to transport the reaction material in the rocket. The velocity the missile and the momentum it can withstand (maundering towards such a small target) would be dependant upon truly massive propulsion systems and a stupendous amount of reaction fuel - I would be surprised if there was the ability to build such a beast in a reasonable timeframe
the only chance - if it is going to hit - is a deflection.... A C Clarke discussed this in some of his Sci Fi books -
Possibly a deflection shot with ion motors 5 years out might do the trick.... that would be your best bet.
If the bomb is engineered to emit its reaction mass as HEAT it can easily evaporate anything necessary! (Think “supernova”)
If there's artificial intelligence, there's bound to be some artificial stupidity.
