If only life were as easy as you
I would still get screwed
Originally posted by KvHagedorn btw, very good comments from Dr. Mordrid and Rakido here. When you see "w" in situations like "pew" or "dew", the letter is really no more a vowel than "r" would be in "car" or "far." And GNEP, I find it amazing that in England, y should not be recognized as an oftentime vowel. What else would you call it in words such as "fry" and "by?"
Hee hee... only going on what I've been taught (is the "gh" a vowel there?)
I would call the "y" in words like "fry" and "by" a "letter".
It doesn't really matter does it? I can accept that there is no "correct" - hey, English in its many forms is alive and constantly changing - if there were only hard and fast rules, or a committee to decide what was right and proper (there isn't for English, as there was (is?) for French for example), then we wouldn't be able to invent new words or even see many different forms of the language around the world. Latin doesn't have a word for "jetliner" or "postmodern" does it?
This is what makes it such a rich (albeit sometimes imprecise) language.
It's imprecision is what makes it rich and "alive". Very few languages can adapt to cultural and diversity related changes as fast or as well as English does.
PLEASE, no flames from the Francophones out there

See! It does affect your short term memory, regardless of what you say.
Yes, and that's true. I never contradicted myself though. In some cases it will have the characteristics of a vowel, but that doesn't make it a vowel. It's still a consonant because it can never be a vowel by itself, and I never once said it can be a vowel by itself. So it can be a vowel, but that doesn't make it one and so I don't consider it to be one. Probably the reason you can't pick it as a vowel in Wheel of Fortune.
However, I can't say that this is totally right in me saying this because....well, there are no definate rules in the English language. Because there are some teachers that I have had that say I am wrong, and some that will say I am right. The rules of English change as much as the next person does. There are some foundations that people agree on, but whose to say even those won't change in the future? Anyway Grubs, I've made my point and won't respond to your useless dribble anymore.

Wrong again. What about "thyme"?
