By the way - sorry to drag it back again, but I've been thinking. If a vowel is in fact about the sound (i.e. it is more about the aural/oral than about the written representation of such), then does it really matter whether or not a "y" is a vowel or not? If a sound does not use lips/teeth/toungue then it's a vowel. And in English there are a lot more of these sounds than even letters in the alphabet. (This is as near as I could get to a definition on my own).

This brings to mind a spanish speaker recently telling me that the reason that (a) they found English difficult and (b) I found Spanish difficult was that English has about 25 to 30 "vowel" sounds, and Spanish has only 5 or 6. So I look for complexity where there is none (hence mash up the pronunciation), and they see too much. Or something. Maybe I'm just rubbish at languages.

So given that English spelling/written representation often bears little similarity to, or consistency with, the spoken language (think rough, Slough, bough, bow, row, row, tough here) then there is no "correct" answer to this one.

Yes, and that's true. I never contradicted myself though. In some cases it will have the characteristics of a vowel, but that doesn't make it a vowel. It's still a consonant because it can never be a vowel by itself, and I never once said it can be a vowel by itself. However, I can't say that this is totally right in me saying this because....well, there are no definate rules in the English language. Because there are some teachers that I have had that say I am wrong, and some that will say I am right. The rules of English change as much as the next person does. That's one way of looking at it. But that would make it a trick question, and these things aren't noted for trick questions. However, we have no way of knowing how much WEIGHT the branch can support. This question has no correct answer. If we were to assume (as the information provided might seem to imply) that Adam is an average guy (x pounds), that John is twice an average guy (2x pounds), and that Rachel is half an average guy (.5x pounds), then the total on the branch is 3.5x pounds, or more than 3 people.

However, since they don't ever give us enough information...
