      Cheers,

      1st - been there forever
Money got tight for awhile a few years ago (plus getting obsessed with work at the time), then my friend turned me on to Wing Chun and Silat for awhile (sometimes it's easy to get sidetracked you know?), then came school again. My poor Ghi hasn't been touched in almost a year

Will be dan someday (then I can get some pretty black hakima pants )

      What about you?
Yes I drive a 13yr old Volkswagen; Yes I'm a dirt poor college student; Yes every tank of gas is more $$ than the value of my car, but it is FUN to drive, so I don't care about your ego or how much your car cost, if you insist on going the exact same speed in the passing lane as the car next to you for 10 minutes, stop being a self righteous ass, move the hell over and just let me by!!!

Look, I know you think the world of me, that's understandable, you're only human, but it's not nice to call somebody "Vain"!

I did Judo as a kid and later Kickboxing for about a year and a half.
Still going to train once in a few months for a few weeks.
Till Alice gets tired of seeing me bruised and asks me to stop killing myself there.
I did the mistake of taking her there once. About 20 minutes after we got there, I went for a fight with a friend (who's much better than I am), a few punches later, she was already out and traumatised for life

Oh, and my nose is (still) unbroken.

It's ok, we use protective gear. Though we still get knocked out once is a while (I got twice in 9 years).

Ah, wonderful, aikido, the art of using your opponents energy against them. Such wonderful and purely defensive, in its true form, technique.

My personal self defense technique is two fold. I call it the Thundering Bear technique. People mess with me, I stand up, look mean, roar and rant in a low, loud voice and people back off and leave me alone. Haven't been in a fight in ... 15 years or so.

My other technique is what we like to call Mexican Judo in these parts:

Ju-don't know if I got a knife, Ju-don't know if I got a gun and Ju-don't know how many hommies I got with me.

By September I'll begin with the classic Karate; It's the easiest to find here in my city.

This thread comes at an appropriate moment - I'm thinking about joining a local Aikido club. Any practitioners here got tips/advice for a newbie? What to look out for (good and bad), what kind of questions to ask, that sort of thing.
Blah blah blah nick blah blah confusion, blah blah blah blah frog.

The tips I totally recommend are the following...

1-Learn to relax your body, do not tense up, if you do Aikido will never work for you.

2-Be patient Be patient Be patient Be patient, The learning curve is huge, some black belts still don't know how to do the basic stance, but that's ok in Aikido.

3-Learn the basics properly, they are the foundation of Aikido.

                            Hope this helps

                            Enjoy

Absolutely. You need to try it to understand. Just go in with an open mind, pay attention, and enjoy. One of the neatest things about it for me when I started was how much you learn by "being done to" as opposed to just "doing unto others".

                              Tips: #1} see Elie's posts
#2} if you enjoy it, DON'T let yourself get discouraged. I'm guessing you already know it's not an art where you go in and do 400 knuckle pushups every day and then work roundhouse drills on a heavy bag for an hour until your shins are bloody - I came from two years of kenpo and Tai Kwon Do when I started, and felt disappointed for a long time because I was used to immediate application and got frustrated, but one day someone will come at you hard and fast on the mat when you're not paying attention and the best way to describe what happens is "wonderful" - it really is like an effortless dance when you connect.

Like Elie said, like in everything else, form is important - it takes about 5 minutes to get good homni (stance) form, but a lifetime to get GOOD form.

Last advice: don't feel bad when some 4'10' 90lb girl tosses you around like a ragdoll your first week

                                Good one LOL

Don't worry they will take it easy on you, but even after getting tossed around like that, you wonder what just happened, and you say to yourself, if she can do it, so can I (after the proper training
