Manny wasn't a compromise character. He was given an expanded role, true - kinda like Arwen in LOTR (blech). But he existed in every one of George's realities. He, Haber, and Heather are the only constants in George's multiverse.

P.S. And Le Guin alludes to the fact that Manny's brain is addled BECAUSE he's been in every reality, and can't figure them all out (much like George and Heather later on).

P.P.S. Also, there is a SLIGHT insinuation at the end that crazy people (who aren't crazy because of hormones or chemicals) are also the result of multiverses... all the psychos in the mental hospital are AFRAID of Haber, whilst normal people aren't... but George still is - can't even look at him. Interesting...

The Internet - where men are men, women are men, and teenage girls are FBI agents!

      Don't forget President Merdle.

not having read the books, i was not dissapointed.....UNTIL reading there was much more to the story.

the story ends in the assistant to the doc manipulating things to improve HER situation which i thought was nice as the doc had gone from obscurity to fame/fortune

I am embarrassed. Not because I watched it but because I didn't watch it to the end. My wife fell asleep (not a big fan of this type of movie) and it was no fun sitting there while she was ...well...snoring.

After reading this thread it seems the PBS version is the way to go. There is one video shop here that specializes in oddball stuff, they may have it.

            Laurie,

Actually it's hit mainstream distro, Amazon and Suncoast both have it.

            Dil,

WTF are you TALKING ABOUT? I just finished reading the book and that wasn't in it.

I think Dil was referring to the movie on A&E, not the novel/PBS version. But I can't say because by the end I had more or less lost interest.

                  It was in the A&E

One of the doc's seesions to manipulate his mind to match the kid's, the doc told the assistant to leave him alone so nothing would affect him....she didnt listen AFAIK

Umm... maybe we watched different A&E versions. The doctor told his assistant to play the tape he had prepared... she did... then left...

That was it. And in fact THAT scene (the chaos, George asleep and Haber asleep) comes out a lot like the book.
