  • US midterm elections: Bush/Republicans huge winners

    For the first time in over 100 years a Presidents party (in this case the Republicans) has not only gained seats in both houses of Congress in a mid-term election (highly unusual) but it has taken control of the previously Democratic Senate and extended their lead in the House of Representatives.

    Typically a Presidents party loses seats in both the House and Senate in mid-term elections; averaging a 30 seat loss in the House and a 3-5 seat loss in the Senate.

    Needless to say the Democrats are in total shock

    The uppance of this is that whatever Democratic opposition there was will now be muted considerably due to the Senate takeover. This means not only do the Republicans take over the Senate leadership, and therefore its agenda, but his judicial appointments, including those to the US Supreme Court, will finally get to the Senate floor for a vote

    Given that about 25% or so of Democrats often lean to the conservative and often vote with the Republicans....

      Your understanding of how these things work in the US is limited

      Actually most all Democrats were supporting the war too.

      Where the differences came out were mainly;

      1. Economic policy; mainly making permanent Bush's tax cut and the removal of the "marriage penalty" (where married couples with families often paid higher rates than singles).

      2. The Democrats in the Senate would not set a vote for Bush's prescription drug plan for senior citizens. The Democrats just couldn't stand not being able to take credit for it

      Another problem they had was that the Presidents version had means testing; meaning that when Bill Gates retires he would not be eligible for the benefit.

      3. The option for under 40 taxpayers to move 10-12% of their Social Security funds into private investment accounts. Currently their return on investment is only about 2% because the govt. takes most of the return off the top for use in the general fund.

      4. The specifics of the new Homeland Security Agency. The Democrats would not support Bush's demand that personnel assignments would not be subject to union rules for maximum flexibility. This is the way it is in all other agencies related to national security, but the Democrats wanted to create a whole new class of union members beholdin' to them

      5. There were also many local issues that affected those seats that switched over. Chief among these were the races in Minnesota and Missouri.

      In Minnesota a sitting Democratic Senator died in a plane crash 1 week before the election and his party nominated a 74 year old retread as the replacement candidate.

      In Missouri a Democratic seat was held by the previous Senators wife, who was appointed to run after he died during the last election campaign, was elected due to a sympathy vote. Problem is that after the election evidence of vote fraud on the part of the Democrats was discovered.

      The situation in Minnesota really went against the Democrats when a televised "memorial" to the Senator who died in the plane crash turned into a political rally for the Democrats, complete with hooting, hollering and booing of those Republicans who came to offer their condolences; they were actually booed out of the event. Even the Independent party Governor of the state found it necessary to leave in disgust.

      The voters were not amused.

              It is very dpressing that the incumbant Democrat won his House seat back here in Kansas. It was a super close race, but in the end the Reform Party took the vote away from the Rep. canidate and the Democrat won.

              Damn west coast liberals moving to Johnson county, screwing up our dominating Republican system.

                This is the thing I really dislike about third and fourth parties; you very often have two conservatives splitting 60% of the vote and some liberal Democrat getting elected who could never get elected (or re-elected) otherwise.

                This is how we ended up with Clinton and his gang of crooks & idiots for 8 years

                        Pfffftttt.....like Nero playing his fiddle Clinton blew his horn (when Monica wasn't blowing something else ) while his foreign policy team totally stunk up the place.

                        1. he should have gone after al Qaeda after the first WTC bombing. The investigators found out about it but nothing significant was done. This just encouraged al Qaeda to keep going.

                        2. he should not have made his "deals" with North Korea. C'mon....giving two nuclear reactors to a totalitarian country in order to stop them from making bombs is just flat stupid

                        3. he totally misjudged the involvement of outsiders in the Oaklahoma City bombing....even though the evidence was in plain sight.

                        etc. etc. etc. etc.

                        We are now paying for his adminstrations lack of both insight and foreign policy ability.

                        Still....it was very entertaining to see Clintons political assasin James Carville on CNN when it became obvious that last nights election was a blow out for the Republicans;

                            And don't forget about all the nuclear weapon technology that he illegally gave to China.

                            And how his administration denutted and politizied the FBI and CIA so badly that 9/11/2001 occured.

                            But then again I guess getting a blowjob from some overweight opportunic intern was more important than the security of the American people.

                              That's right.....Clinton's the one that let MIRV and precision guidance technologies to be sold to China in vioation of the existing export bans!! Chalk up one more for the Clintonistas.

                              Frank Church, 70's Democratic conspiracy theorist, was the one who set off the emasculation of the FBI and CIA. It was pretty much finished during the Carter administration and made worse by the Clintonistas.
