For the first time in over 100 years a Presidents party (in this case the Republicans) has not only gained seats in both houses of Congress in a mid-term election (highly unusual) but it has taken control of the previously Democratic Senate and extended their lead in the House of Representatives.
Typically a Presidents party loses seats in both the House and Senate in mid-term elections; averaging a 30 seat loss in the House and a 3-5 seat loss in the Senate.
Needless to say the Democrats are in total shock
The uppance of this is that whatever Democratic opposition there was will now be muted considerably due to the Senate takeover. This means not only do the Republicans take over the Senate leadership, and therefore its agenda, but his judicial appointments, including those to the US Supreme Court, will finally get to the Senate floor for a vote
Given that about 25% or so of Democrats often lean to the conservative and often vote with the Republicans....
