Well, the clerk said that the live action version was pretty accurate compared to the anime one, if that's any help. But I haven't seen it yet so I can't confirm what he said.

If you get the Sci-Fi channel (in the UK), they show three or four hours of anime on thursday nights about midnight (varies week to week, check the site and set the VCR). They currently show a film and Eva, Nadesico, and Blue Gender (although they're most of the way through those series now). They'll be showing Spriggan sometime next month.

As for stuff to 'evaluate':
Geobreeders (3 part OVA) is pretty funny, although it starts to tire near the end. The sequel supposedly sucks though.
Metropolis is very good (I saw it in the cinema - it was well worth it).
The Patlabor movies are also good, if a little slow.
Chalk me up as a Ghost in the Shell fan. Apart from that, I haven't seen most of what everyone's mentioned.

hm.. i've just flicked through the films to check for consistency and quality. It would appear that La Blue Girl is just some dodgy jap porn. The title is in japanese so I am not sure if it is the correct film....

Ok what about the Macross series? I watched Macross Plus a couple weeks ago...good series. Theres a couple of movies out there for the earlier series back from the 80's, but I forget which are the good ones and the ones to stay away from
