Even IF we knew the exact time and place, we still couldn't count down unless we standardized on a time zone. People at GMT will have a different countdown than people in EST.

Counting down in hours would therefore negate the time zone prob we have with counting down in days. If EST = GMT - 6 (not sure) and the moment will be 13.00 EST, than the moment will also be 19.00 GMT. If current time is 05.00 GMT, then it is also 23.00 EST the day before. One countdowns zero days, the other 1 day. But BOTH countdown 14 hours:
Now: 23.00 EST......05.00 GMT
Announ: 13.00 EST.....19.00 GMT
Countdown: 14 hours......14 Hours Q.E.D.
Again, some very unrealistic

1. We are on earth
2. Not travelling very fast
3. No heavy object or VERY fast moving object nearby,
But it beats counting down in days like Einsteins relativity beat Newton's gravity laws.
Note sure if there are half-hour time zones, if so, we need to get down to minutes (or half hours at least).
