        Superfly:
LOD systems are used precisely to increase overall performance in current(and future) games at the expense of visuall quality
Would this not depend on the LOD chosen? You could put the distance detail on high/med/low and not notice much difference (if 20 polys are viewed from a mile away, how many pixels are they going to cover - 1? 2?).

In your example yes,but i'm not talking about LOD adjustments as far as the control panel properties go,or using third party utilities, those allow LOD bias adjustments only as far as textures are concerned to increase performance,at the expense of visual quality, nothing more..

LOD systems implemented by game developers usually create 3 models of every object in high/med/low poly counts and it's up to the game engine itself to determine which one to use, depending on the distance it's viewed from, but i haven't seen an engine yet that makes the transition between the different models completely seamless...

well, at the moment DX8.1 is supported by:
            - SiS (their latest one supports PS up to version 1.3 on HW and VS up to version 1.1 on SW)
            - nVidia GF4 Ti -series (Supports PS up to version 1.3/VS up to version 1.1)
            - ATI Radeon 8500 -series (Supports PS up to version 1.4/VS up to version 1.1)

PS 1.2, 1.3 and 1.4 were added to DX8.1, so being DX8.1 compliant, chip must be able to do at least PS 1.2 functions. And if you look above list, it is most likely to be that most DX8.1 games will be optimized for PS 1.3, because all above cards can do it. DX8.0 looks like to be as "Only for the XBox" conversion platform and I doubt that anyone would make gfx engine optimized for it, if there wouldn't be any plans making it also to XBox. sure all the above cards can handle PS 1.1 and 1.0 because pixel shaders are backwards compactible. And that's why I suppose that most XBox are converted to PC sooner or later.

You say it's up to the game engine itself. So, why do you argue against yourself?
