I'm pretty sure it ain't written Parhelion (plur. Parhelia or Parenthelia) in the dictionnary, because all three of them have distinctive characteristics..
I guess you missed the part where I quoted two dictionaries. You're "pretty sure," but incorrect.

Btw, if Parhelia was a plural noun, the singular form would be Parhelium, not Parhelion.
Maybe you need to learn your declensions a little better then. I've over 3 years of Latin study, as well as a good bit of English study. It's not straight Latin anyway, it's derived from Greek first. If you'd like another example, what's the singular form of "criteria"? I'll give you three guesses, and the answer doesn't have the letter "m" in it. Feel free to consult a dictionary if you feel the need.

    Edit:
DukeP, the English plural of "virus" is "viruses". In Latin, people still aren't sure, since there isn't any classical Latin with the plural. If you absolutely must guess, then there's some hint that it's a 4th declension noun, and the plural would be "virus" with a long 'u'.

Hey, I've had latin each year in high school, which means 5 years; and here we go (by heart my friend: 1st declination: A, A, AM, AE, AE, A, AE, AE, AS, ARUM, IS, IS; 2nd declination: Masculine: US, E, UM, I, O, O, I, I, OS, ORUM, IS, IS Neutral: UM, UM, UM, I, O, O, A, A, A, ORUM, IS, IS; 3rd Declination: Masculine: IS(or nothing), IS(or nothing), EM, IS, I, E, ES, ES, ES,UM (or IUM), IBUS, IBUS Neutral: (Nothing), (Nothing), (Nothing), IS, I, E (or I), A (or IA), A (or IA), A (or IA), UM (or IUM), IBUS, IBUS, IBUS; 4th Declination: Masculine: US, US, UM, US, UI, U, US, US, US, UUM, IBUS, IBUS Neutral: US, US, UM, US, UI, U, UA, UA, UA, UUM, IBUS, IBUS; 5th Declination: ES, ES, EM, EI, EI, E, ES, ES, ES, ERUM, EBUS, EBUS

If there was a singular form to Parhelia, it would have to be Parheli or Parhel...

Anyway, What I wanted to say is that a Parhelia, a Parhelion and a Parenthelia and not the same thing: they are all photometeors, but that's IT. An eclipse, a solar flare and an Aurora Borealis are not the same thing are they? Well, it's the same here...

EDIT: Btw, if you want to be grammaticaly correct, you're supposed to say "viri"or "virii" (since you're supposed to say maxima when using the plural form of maximum) because virus is from the 2nd declination. Since when there's no plural in Latin??? Maybe in Wombatin, but there is in Latin...

Isn't it funny how the "other" card builders are suddenly chumming up on their future specs, even ones that won't be available (to them) 'til the 2nd. 1/2 of the year

Hey, Wombat, I was kinda right and kinda wrong: the real name would be parhelium, but parhelion is now accepted too... Sorry ,bout that, it's just because, parhelion is never ever used in french; we only use parhelium… no hard feelings

The plural form of "parhelium" (or parhelion) is indeed "parhelia", but if you take the singular "parhelia" is a different photometeoric effect... a Parhelia (singular) is the phenomenon where two or three mock-suns appears (at 48, 60 or 120 degrees) due to highly polyhedral ice crystals… and they are much, MUCH more rare than a parhelium.

DukeP, the English plural of "virus" is "viruses".
Oh! Christ. Just goes to show how the lingo at my university gets spoiled by so many nationalities.
Actually im quite an expert on viruses and still I have used the Danish plural - even at all english symposiums.

As a biologist, I have to be somewhat fluent in greek (ancient) and latin. For some odd reason the science lingo for biologists is split between TWO ancient languages. Go figure.

yeah, you'Re right, Parhelia would be a cool name for Matrox' next product; however, I bet you they'll got with the "Name-that-screams-power-so-it'll-get-all-the-OEM-contracts" name for Parhelia; I wouldn't mind at all having a Matrox Parhelia (with a very cool logo and a case sticker:P ) in my system. Matrox previous codenames were pretty ugly: who would like to have a Matrox Toucan or Condor II graphic card??? Certainly not me

                      U R all wrong
the word "parhelia" is a combination of the Latin root
"par" (parare, par, pari - to make equal, equal - disparate, parity, peer)
and the Greek root "helios" (helios - sun, bright - heliotropic, helium, heliograph)
so the etymologicaly correct singular would be "parhelios"(if u treat it as a Greek word) or
"parhelion" (if u treat it as a Latin word).

of course all this doesnt really matter, I just hope the card will shine like a "helios" and be "par" to no other
