  • Official Launch date...

Hey everyone, I don't know if you have noticed, but almost all graphic card annoucement from Matrox since the G200 have been made in the first half of june with the actual product (especially the G400 and G200) shipping in late august/september… What I'd like to know, (maybe Ant or someone else who is in the Matrox' "In-Crowd" could tell us if Matrox plan on doing the same thing, or maybe they could annouce the product earlier this time (and actually ship it before the end of the summer...).

I don't know for you, but I'm already prepared to pay a hefty sum for a Parhelia board; paying $50 more to get it faster would not really be a problem (to get the high-end board; I'll buy one or two entry-level board, but I don't really mind waiting a little more to get those). I just wish I won't get my Parhelia board as a christmas gift

If my memory serves me correctly, I think the G400 was announced in March/April and the G450 some time in May.

    Just a heads up.

Here are some old official dates: Millennium G400: May 12th 1999; Millennium G450: June 14 2000; Millennium G550: June 19 2001 (And I remember that the Millennium/Mystique G200 were announced at the end of may… I don't really care about chip announcement, as they are not good indicators: the G400 chip was annouced 3 months before the board, the G450 chip 1 month before, and the G550 chip & board on the same day... and the Glaze 3D was announced a whole Big Bang before the boards were actually available Who knows, maybe this time, the board will be announced BEFORE the chip

Anyway, I don't really care about chip annoucement; what I really care about is board annoucement: what I want with Parhelia, is an announcement of both chipa & boards on the same day, just like the G550, or all the GeForces X...

We at Matrox listen sometimes and take your wish seriously. We were going to announce the chip with full specs next tuesday. As that is not wanted, we will announce chip&board in about 3 months time.

                      Thx 4 the tip!

What good is a chipset announcement anyway? Annoucing the Chip long before the board can only lead to mroe competition from other companies: Remember the good old Radeon 8500? It caught nVIDIA unprepared and the had to rush-release the G3 Ti line, as their NV25 part was far from ready... The same thing When nVIDIA announced the GeForce 256: ATI was unprepared with only it's Rage 128 Pro, so they had to rush the Rage 128 MAXX out. Announcing the Parhelia chip now and annoucing the boards in 2 months would only give ATI & nVIDIA time to respectively announce the R300 and NV30, which are both supposed to be very-high-end DX9 compliant designs... and their chips are announced at the same time as their boards...(sometimes a few days later, but that ain't a problem.) I don't want to drool over Parhelia specs for 4 months before I actually get a board (like what happenned to me with the G400: chipp announced in march, board received at the end of July )

If the announcement would cause others to introduce better products sooner, then what would be the problem exactly?

For consumers probably very little - except more nVblur™
From a marketing standpoint the longer you can have your product out their before others can catch up the better it is for the companies wallet.

The way of the presentation of the G550 was a little different to the other chips before. If I remember correctly they had an press conference or something with an lovely NDA until 06/19/2001. It´s quite possible that Matrox will do something similar and we would have a lot of hardware sites with Matrox´s new chip/card as their main theme.
