We are pleased to see this new competitor, but this is somewhat dampened by the fact that up to now, working samples of the hardware have only been available for view at individual presentations. There's no card in sight, much less final specifications, names for the cards, prices and benchmarks.

If the nvidia card is indeed better than the matrox card I do wonder when Matrox will release a newer card. The R1000 and nv30 will probably be around the same performance wise, there may be a 3rd company whose chip is as good but unfortunately i don't see matrox as that 3rd company I do hope matrox does release a follow up to this card in about 9 months and don't make the same mistake they did with the G400
Now we get another quality card with Triplehead, DVD capabilities, 2D features, ... a nice replacement for my aging MAXMain: Dual Xeon LV2.4Ghz@3.1Ghz | 3X21" | NVidia 6800 | 2Gb DDR | SCSI
Second: Dual PIII 1GHz | 21" Monitor | G200MMS + Quadro 2 Pro | 512MB ECC SDRAM | SCSI
Third: Apple G4 450Mhz | 21" Monitor | Radeon 8500 | 1,5Gb SDRAM | SCSI

why is everyone comparing this to the g400?
wouldn´t it make more sense to compare it to the g200?
it is a first edition of a new core, and they haven´t even been touching 0.13 micron yet, and the drivers is problay not as mature as they can be either, i don´t think this card will reveal the true potential of the parhelia core. if you really want to compare matrox and nvidia, then compare the parhelia-core to the nv30-core, and judge them on their potential. This sig is a shameless atempt to make my post look bigger.

Logically, for it to have three monitor support for a game. it must be (reasonably) able to power all three perspectives at a decent frame rate.
Surely this 'simple' task is indicative of Parhelia's 'grunt' power being superior to GForce4. (until maybe P chip ?)... ahh the wait continues.Last edited by AD; 14 May 2002, 07:35.www.cornidesign.com

The lack of any serious Z-occlusion culling technology is a major disappointment. If you've noticed, occlusion culling is something that ATI and NVIDIA are continuing to improve on. The next-generation Radeon and NVIDIA's NV30 will both have extremely sophisticated forms of occlusion culling built into the hardware. This tradeoff can become a killer for Matrox in situations where complex pixel shader programs are applied to pixels that should have been occluded.
I think ive come across wrong here, there are some great features like triple head (not practical for me but ill me more than happy to brag about it lol) the DVD quality will also be very good the 10 bit giga colour seems good as well, i would like to see how the 16x FAA performs before commenting on it anand seems to think that it some cases it may actually not be wise to use it which is a suprise to me

All I can say is
WOW!!!
I personally think anandtech is being a little tough on the parhella, because, lets face it:
1) Playing games at the lowest resolution with the lowest detail settings isn't how I want to play ANY game, let alone with a device like the Parhellia. And Anand forgets that the Parhellia drivers are pretty new, and drivers can get better and faster over a product's lifefile.
2) I don't spend all that much time playing games. Its the other features of the card that are making me go Wow. 10-bit colour, accurate and fast 2D, the BEST dualhead (2 equal RAMDACS) and even triplehead have the ability to make my life much easier. The low-pass filters seem to be some of the best filters EVER used on consumer hardware.
3) Have ATI or Nvidia created a Performance solution for dualhead yet. From what I can tell, all thier dualhead products have not been using their flagship processors. Being able to do dualhead on a card that can match the GF4-4600 is worth the cost of it alone.
4) Who cares what new things nvidia and ati ect are creating, The parhellia is an exciting and
Given these features, the Parhellia is already a killer in my book, and I really don't care how much it costs, I am getting one, and probably a 128meg version. (as long as the price isn't STUPID, which it won't be)
I also don't care what other manufacturers are going to create, matrox seem to be the only company that is pulling off such a well rounded and powerful video card (every other company seems obsessed with 3d performance, obviously at the expense of other areas)

How would the performance of the Parhelia using surround gaming compare to the performance of it using a single monitor ? And how would the Parhelia with 1 monitor stand up to the competition ?
Because I think that is what we also need to compare, it is unlikely that the NV30 also supports surround gaming.
Also, what impact can the driver-revisions have ?
(I noticed that the screenshots from 3Dmark haven't got the fps reading on them...)
As some people have said: gaming isn't everything. I still use a G200 in my system, and now I'm coming to the point where I can no longer play the newest games, but many existing games work in lower resolutions. Bearing in mind that my computer is still a PII-450, I don't consider it that bad at all . But the G200 still gives great imagequality in 2D (running in 1280x1024 @85 Hz).
The Parhelia will no doubt allow me to play the latest crop of games in high resolution/quality (after a computerupgrade ), and it will serve me for 2D use as well.

Slougi: Haig mentioned the 0.13 micron in one of his the threads on the Matrox forum, claiming that it is not ready for production yet. I'm not sure if I read it here somewhere or on Matrox-forums, but someone hinted at Matrox producing this card in 0.13 by late fall...

Now that I think it over, 16x FAA and aniso filtering will have a negligible effect on performance on the Parhelia My next card

Voyager4D: Is it possible to make 0,13 micron graphic cards in volume now, or is 0,15 the only way to go for now?
Haig : Yes it is possible to mass produce .13 but each time someone comes out with new tech, it's usually larger than that followed by a new product further down the road with .13.
VJ, Someone said that on a single monitor the Parhelia can play Quake3 @ 300-400 fps (we are not sure yet) and can play it @ 100fps on three monitors, this is not confirmed it is only a rumour. Drivers are very very important, if you don't believe me ask ATI Nvidia has made an image as a company who has brilliant drivers, there current drivers are pretty good i hear. Matrox doesn't want to release any details on performance yet either. When i play jk2 mulitiplayer on low settings on my PII 450 and G400 max my fps is so very low
