What bothers me about Tom and Anand's previews is why on earth do they compare Parhelia with some boards from nV and ATI that we ain't going to be able to get in another 8-9 months.

In their previous previews they have always compared the preview objects with existing products. They compared the R200 with the Geforce3 and the Geforce4 with the Radeon 8500. Now they are comparing something we are probably going to be able to see on the shelfs within 2-3 months with some kind of ghost card nobody knows what it will be.

And somehow in Anand's preview it sounded like a 256bit memory bus wasn't a big deal, but leaving out bandwidth saving tech is a catastrophy...

This thing is supposed to have more than 20GB/s of bandwidth!!! That's a big thing, no culling in the world can compensate for x2 bandwidth.

And why do they nag about the price. A Ti 4600 costs $400, a Radeon 8500 128MB(impossible to get hold of!!!) $300. I cant see a 128MB Parhelia be much more than $400-$450 and for that you get a board with a lot more value. Offcourse nV and ATI will slash their prices but you do get a lot more with the Matrox card.

And the only time a Ti4600 gets 300-400 frames in Q3 is when you couple it with one of the fastest CPU's on the fastest platforms and run a resolution around 640x480. Suddenly a Ti4600 is just as fast as a Parhelia(don't forget the free anisotropic filtering, the GF can do that aswell!!! )!!!

Remember his news items from a couple of weeks back? Notably the one where he said he'd been to San Francisco and saw the type of thing that makes himl so passionate to be in the IT industry? His Parhelia article identifies that trip as his briefing on Parhelia, so I'd say it's safe to say he's excited about it.
