Any card can handle every day work on the computer. Hell, a Voodoo3 will do that fine. I want a card that performs regardless of features. Features are only important when they can be used out of the box. If the card isn't meant to go after the GF4 then it shouldn't be compared to it. The GF4 is a gamers card geared and aimed at the gamer and games.

On that note, I dig the stereo view and hope it can perform well enough to use it on games I will use. It doesnt have to be the fastest, but it has to be more then playable. Desktop Apps are a given.

    -edit-

And no, I am not dissapointed at all. My expectations were not looking at this card as a pure gaming card. Had that been the case, maybe. I cant say I would be dissapointed in something I have yet to see perform lol

Summing up: they're both free hardware sluts. Whoever gives them stuff first gets a break on getting good play.

It also doesn't help that the Toms Hardware Parhelia preview was written by the guy who's editor-in-chief of RivaStation.com.

If Parhelia is partially targetted at high-end graphics workstations, and it is, it should have some pretty kick-ass OGL.

I noticed that the guy from Toms started Riva as well. So I wonder what he thought of the TNT2 vs G400 war

I'll bet he was on the NVIDIA side of that one.

Whatever his past record is though, it's still quite surprising to see such a negative article towards Parhelia - while Parhelia isn't for every one (it's missing NVblur RAMDACs for a start), I don't understand most of his critical points.

Oh well, roll on with the production Matrox...

aaahhhh... who cares about fps and madonion... what I really care about a gfx card is it's visual quality and hi-end, innovative, and useful features (except for headcasting, which is not very useful for me ). As long as it does decently in speed, for sure i am going for the card. And I am pretty sure why all of us like Matrox: because they make quality products.

personally, i am impressed with the parhelia, especially displacement mapping. Don't forget about the 10-bit DVD/HDTV decoder... it's all about high quality graphics.

about fearing that NV30 and R300 will go beyond parhelia soon, i am not that worreid... after all, i don't want to replace a card that is outdated after six months... it's a waste of money as well as silicon. Besides, i am pretty sure than parhelia will shine brighter/as bright as NV30 or R300, as Matrox has been working on this straight for 3 years... well.. that, i don't really know, but i am confident to say that they have been working on such high-end stuff for much longer than nvidia or ATI, and that they have much more time to understand and tune up their own product and innovation. Personally, i think nvidia and ati will have a harder time in the race, because matrox has been working on this secretly for a LOOOONNGGG time, while the other two will not have the human resources to spend on such a long, quality project, as they try to market their cards every six months or so...

One thing for sure... the parhelia will probably be superior than the NV30 and R300 in terms of features and quality (hehe... no batting coz i dun wanna risk eat hats )... besides, i am pretty confident to say that matrox can implant PixilShader 2.0 at ease... so i guess nvidiots and ATiodits (no offend intended lol) should watch out more for Matrox.

BTW... my wishlist for the next Matrox card will be:
0.13 micron fab (0.09 will be reaaaallllly nice )
QuadHead (maybe 4th monitor for the ceiling lol )
3D holograpgic support like asus's 3d glasses implantation (their AGP V-xxxx deluxe product line)
              Pixil Shader 2.0
A low-end vidcap card like the Rainbow Runner by Matrox's Video Group
              --->Nothing i can possibly think of<----

Edit Kept saying Vertex Shader 2.0 instead of Pixil Shader 2.0.... *sigh*

Parhelia will kick major booty, and that's that! I don't and never will care what Tom or Anand has to say because as far as I'm concerned non of them actually seen final product in action.

Wait people, just wait for actual benchmarks and then drool even more

i don't have to see any benchmark to know that i will (must) have this card, it goes far over all i expected, and will least for the next 2 maybe 3 years. (anybody here who does see any difference between 100fps and 400????)

and i can go on, locking at my screen without geting bad eyes or thinking the damned thing will explode every second because of all the glimmer.

matrox did a fantastic job with this card, and yes they are back at the market.

everyone whining about low framerates in 3D must be some kid that starting playing a year ago I played Q1 at 512x384 with my P100 at ~20FPS and was more than happy. 30FPS was considered fast actually.
ok seriously, everything >60FPS is a waste IMO. I know this only the average but as long as the minimal framerate is >30FPS everything is fine. And i am very confident that the Parhelia will still deliever this 60FPS average in 2 years, if not at 1600x1200 then at least at 1280x1024 which is still very playable (i can not believe i really said that).
                  no matrox, no matroxusers.

I would really have liked to see true triple display mode, rather than just the ability to span the windows desktop or a game creens.

There is no perfect video card, guys. Trust me, as I own ATI, Nvidia, 3DFX, and Matrox cards.

I would say I am satisfied with the card. Good to see new technology hit the scene. And don't sell memory bandwidth short. It seems Matrox has addressed the anisotrophy and FSAA issue pretty well, and 2D should be superb. There will be teething pains with the drivers, but they've been faithfully addressing issues with the G400 MAX.

Main thing is what is the performance hit with aniso and/or FSAA on? Indications are it will be low. I got a Ti 4600 overclocked to the hilt right now: 338/745, and a 2.6 gig Northwood at 163 FSB. 3DMark2001 w/o aniso or FSAA= 12,447. With aniso at max setting (no FSAA!)=7856. QuakeIII frame rates at 1600x1200 with no aniso=185-190, with max aniso=80-90. CodeCreatures demo 1600x1200 w/o aniso= 20 fps. With max aniso=8 fps.

Heck if the Parhelia can just match the Ti 4600 3DMark scores but suffer only a 3-5 or 10% performance hit it's a no brainer there.

As long as Matrox can ship me a card before 29TH JUNE 2002.

                        They will have my money

I will be more than satisfied with Parhelia if I can play Comanche 4 without jerking screen update (as it appears with G400 MAX)
