          yup. it's just LCD limitations... LCDs can do ~1billion or more once the tech matures.

          i think... lol..

          But I also have a question: On a DVI port, there are 3 rows of 8 pins, and on the side there are 4 more pins. Is it correct to assume that each row is used to transfer each color? (so 3 rows = RGB). or am i completely lost? Hoping for some advice

            Well I would like to see:

            128mb parhelia (Radeon/Geforce competitor)
            256mb higher clocked parhelia (Radeon Pro/Geforce Ultra competitor)
            256mb parhelia with workstation drivers. Very expensive (Quadro/FireGL competitor)

            and I would like to see a version that could replace the g550.
            Something like a Radeon 9000 with triplehead would be perfect.

              DVI ports actually use TMDS (Transition Minimized Differential Signaling). Its a low voltage differantial pair data standard for digital video links between PCs and monitors etc. Normal DVI cables use 1 channel, which is actually 4 pairs of signals and provides enough bandwidth for 1600x1200 true color 60Hz. TMDS is encoded by a trasmitter chip into serialized data such as a PanelLink161 from SiliconImage, so the rgb colors are all actually interleaved together in the 4 pairs of encoded signals. The high resolution chip runs up to 165MHz, which is theoretically enough for 1900x1440 truecolor, but card makers usually have it run at 1600x1200 max (around 132MHZ). There is a ground pin for each signal pair, plus DDC clock and DDC data pins, and hot plug detect to autosync to a monitor when you plug something new in. I'd post a pic, of the dvi pinout, but I have all that stuff at work.
              If you look at your DVI cable, there will probably be a chunk of pins missing in the middle. Those are actually for a dualchannel setup in the dvi spec. For that, you'd use a pair of transmitter chips and send 8 differantial pairs of data, so you can do crazy stuff like 2048x1526 truecolor. There are extremely few cards out there that support duallink however. The additional pins along the side are for analog support.

                In fact, the EIZO EX series monitors already have 10-bit output!! However, they use an internal look-up table to translate the 8-bit data that is fed through the cable into 10-bit output values. If only....

                The good thing about these monitors is that you can edit the look-up table yourself. If I were to buy an LCD for colour critical work, it would be one of these...

                  Yes, more market appeal would be rather helpful for marketing the things.

                          If Matrox puts out a card that keeps their 2d quality
                          and that can run games at the same or higher performance
                          then ATi and Nvidias highend cards Im going back to matrox
                          without hesitation.
                          Dx9 support all the way through
                          High 3d performance, drivers that are optimized for games
                          aswells as applications..
                          Good quality AA and FSAA with resonable performance.
                          and Tripple head with surroundgaming.. if i ever get rich enough
                          to get 3 displays..

                          Parhelia would prolly have been great with some bandwidth saving features and higher core clockrate..

                                hehe, DX10 isnt due in a few years since MS halted
                                development on DX, they think DX9 has features enough
                                to last a while..
                                wich is good since Featurewize your DX9 cards from today
                                will last longer..
