        yep.

        part of this

could have ended up as part of Pitou. But as said, I am not aware about which level those negotiations were done and how much effort was put on that. In the end, afaik, the result was based on NIH thinking.

someone should send matrox xanax or prosac.... they are obviously depressed if all they do is designe, and then shelve every thing.... it reminds me so mutch of the tripy aprehensive love sick hero of Berlioz's Symphoy Fantastic

Nop if Matrox design and does not produce chips, it means that the BitBoys have taken over Matrox and are doing as always : design killer chips, tell everyone it's almost ready and then start to design another more powerfull chip. But they always forgot to sell the chips.

By the way the packaging of this BitBoys chips looks so like a Parhelia Packaging

Hey it reminds me, some time ago there were rumors of Matros licensing BB tech ! So those rumors were true

Don't jump on the gun. Bitboys are doing PDA/Cellular stuff now. Their Acceleon G10 has been already implemented in NEC LCD/TFT panel(s).

well, chips you are looking at, are located on my desk and they are VERY Real.

I have gone about 100 times here why things went wrong on Pyramid3D, Glaze3D, AXE and Hammer, so if you really are interested, use search. Sometimes it was their fault, but usually things just didn't go like planned. (for example, without a fab, it is hard to start full scale production.)

Forgot to sell the chips? what an earth you are talking about? they started to sell Glaze3D way too early.

but Parhelia and AXE has nothing to do with each other. even their internal tech differs quite lot. (12 MB eDRAM / 2 TMUs per pipe / 0.17µm eDRAM fab vs. 256 Bit external Memory bus / 4 TMUs per pipe / 0.15µm normal fab)

Also AXE has huge core. it is roughly 20x20 mm.

Once more, those negotiations that I heard, were talking about stuff to be transferred from AXE (or Hammer) to Pitou, but Matrox didn't like the idea and it didn't take anywhere.

They need to shift strategy. Sitting between 2 chairs is not comfy. They _need_ to get better at production. If they don't target 3D gamers, who cares, but if they need to produce the chips at a good cost. Niche markets aren't big, so production runs are small, so unit cost is high.

One of the reasons Nvidia is where it is is because they invested in decent production hardware. Being able to correct chip defects without a new tape-out is a definite advantage.

In the end it didn't matter that TNT IQ was really bad...

Nvidia has been delivering the goods in a very consistent way for a very long time (until the NV30 debacle). Matrox is still struggling...

well if this info about bitboys is true, then its really sad for the industry that matrox took that attitude, ATi and Nvid are stuck in a rut where they keep just tweaking out tried and tested technologies. To compete with each other, matrox were the only ones who brought real innovation to the market and unfortunatly they are now dead in the consumer world. Even if Pitou had performed badly, the fact that matrox would have been willing to incorporate bitboys tech into it would have meant some really new thinking could have entered into the graphics industry, still i suppose they are still functioning as a business which is a +.

Which is the vast majority BTW. It's thanks to the TNT's nice feature list that the TNT2 ended up in Dells, HPs, Compaqs, IBMs etc. Surely not it's IQ.
