  • about big bang...it explanes pretty well what we observe.
And according to it at the beginning of big bang you've had all the energy in one point...in such conditions time effectively stops, so word "before" loses it's sense...

And you're right, it'll be tought to figure out what was/is beyond (I think that is better than "before") big bang (although some try...).

To say there was a start means there might be and end. But if you look at the big bang as a big explosion that will enventually implode on itself to then restart the whole process again is a very interesting thought. And in that respect, there is no actual "start" just another beginning to the same old process.

      Hmmm.

You know... our universe could very well be a small part of a MUCH bigger picture.

Let's look at our universe before the big bang as an atom. To us the atom seems infinitely huge in size but to the opposite side of the spectrum it could very well be so small that they aren't sure it exists, which is what we think of atoms now.

Anyways, I'm gonna stop talking before I let my mind wander off too far!

      • There doesn't have to be an end nacessarily - it's most probable that time is pseudo dimension (normal one has dimension, turn and lenght; apologies for any confusion because of wrong translation of polish terms)

and other things you've mentioned...yeah "foam" of universes, universe tree/self creating universe

or other little weird sounding things I've heard of, like big bang being consequence of immediate swallowing 3 dimensinal universe by our, 4 dimensional (both from immadiate decomposition of unstable 7 dimensional one...which one of course also has it's place on the tree above ). The last sounds tricky to me even...I must do a search once for it (red it somewhere long time ago, so the above isn't quote - probably I've changed/forgot something)

        • all of these theories are so so so so open to debate. All of them have inconclusive proofs and personally i dont believe that we, as a species, have reached a satisfactory answer to any of these questions.

what i do know is that my dissertation will be finished within the hour, and i severely need a foaming pint of strong bitter.

          and sleep.

although not necessarily in that order

          • @Nowhere: I forgot about dimension's! But that's a whole new discussion on it's own!

            @jonnylane: That's a very interesting personal view!!

In any case, I find it fun to discuss such things. It's always fascinating to read what other people think on such subjects.

I don't even know (tend to think not) if we as a species have the capacity to even understand the true answer(s) - or even the questions.

              • At least we're trying - that's the best thing about it I think.

btw jonnylane, I believe the same was thought/would be thought (well...not everybody had acces to this kind of knowledge in the past) by majority of people about all new/breaktrough theories in history...

im not saying its never going to happen; no-one can predict the future. Im saying that theories come and go quicker than most people realise. All these years of education in physics has taught me that we still have a lot to discover; i feel its more realistic to stick to current and more urgent problems.

we seem to be getting ahead of ourselves in this day and age. Not so long ago people were genuinlly amazed by new discoveries; x rays is one example. Now we seem to see it coming before it even arrives.

                  How boring is that?

                  • The real problem I see is that we've long crossed the point were technology is so powerful that I don't trust us as a whole to use it responsibly. Social advance is much slower than technological, and the gap is widening.

                    • If they find that God is a woman, perhaps the universe is contained within one of her huge jiggly boobs and so seems to be contracting or expanding depending on where one looks and how fast she's running. No one can really explain the physics of this complex motion.
